Psychology professor David Ludden, Ph.D., warns about the dangers of latching onto beauty standards displayed in media. He notes that in the 21st century, celebrities’ figures are becoming increasingly slender and athletic. Many examples are only barely achievable through a combination of genetic luck, dietary restrictions, intense exercise, and even performance-enhancing drugs. Despite this, as people become more engulfed by media, they believe it’s a personal failure that they can't look like the models on screen. The unnaturally perfected physiques seen in beauty pageants cause discomfort for the average person.
Professor Ludden advises looking for beauty in the daily world outside of media. That’s the best a person can do to build a healthier understanding of beauty, apart from completely tuning out of all visual media. In this day and age, the latter is not practical at all.
Whether you’re with or against such competitions, it’s hard to deny their spectacle. Sometimes it’s best not to think too much about it and enjoy the show. When you’re done looking through every contestant’s costume entry, share your favorites in the comments below!
