Anyone who’s been up at 3 a.m. with a feverish toddler knows parenting isn’t a walk in the park. In fact, 62% of American parents say raising kids turned out to be harder than they’d expected, and 41% feel tired all or most of the time.
Between the endless laundry and trying to remember which kid has soccer practice on Tuesday, it’s easy to see why so many moms and dads feel stretched thin. Still, children never asked to be born. Once adults decide to bring a little one into the world, looking after them becomes their job.

That job involves much more than putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads. Kids need someone who will hug them when they’re upset, teach them right from wrong, and help them make sense of the world.
Yet some parents react to the smallest mistakes as if their children have done something unforgivable. A spilled glass of juice or a broken plate can turn into a full-blown shouting match, leaving a child scared of doing anything wrong.
Repeatedly yelling at or shaming children can lead to more behavioral problems and emotional difficulties, when what they really need is patience and guidance to learn from their mistakes.

The truth is, harsh punishments are often the easier way out when it comes to getting children to behave. After all, being screamed at or threatened with consequences can be frightening, so kids may quickly learn to do as they’re told to avoid getting into trouble.
But that obedience comes at a cost. In the long run, instead of helping children grow into confident, independent adults, such treatment can leave them with difficulties that follow them well into adulthood.

For example, some parents think controlling every aspect of their teenager’s life will keep them out of trouble. But when a teen gets interrogated or punished for telling the truth, they may quickly learn that keeping their mouth shut is much easier. They’ll likely still do things their parents disapprove of, just without telling them.
A 2024 study found that teenagers with more controlling parents became less willing to share details about their lives over time. As a result, if something genuinely dangerous happens, their parents might be the last people they turn to for help.

A kid who’s taught to obey their parents without question can easily turn into an adult who keeps their head down when they really should speak up.
In the classroom, they might be too scared to disagree with a teacher or ask for help when they’re falling behind. At work, they may never find the courage to request a promotion or tell their boss that expecting replies to emails at 9 p.m. is completely unreasonable.
Research supports these concerns. One study linked controlling parenting to lower confidence in one’s own abilities, while another found that young adults with overinvolved parents reported more self-doubt about their career choices.

The same goes for their personal lives. When a parent constantly belittles them or throws things across the room in a fit of anger, a child slowly learns that this is just how people who love you act.
So years later, when a partner disrespects them or a friend keeps treating them like an afterthought, setting boundaries or walking away from that toxic relationship can feel incredibly hard.
Studies have found that kids who got hit and rarely felt loved at home are more likely to end up with a violent partner later on. Growing up being torn down emotionally has also been tied to a higher chance of getting hurt again as an adult.
