Whether it’s a dog resting it’s soft and squishy face on my lap or a child handing me a flower they found in the park, it’s always nice to say thank you for things that make your day. Maybe even smaller things solicit appreciation from you, like the smell of chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven or the way a beautiful butterfly floats around your garden. I’m all for being polite, so when it comes to expressing thanks, I tend to be extremely generous.

Thankfully, there is a whole community online that appreciates politeness just as much as they love wholesome photos. Allow me to introduce the “Thanks, I love it!” subreddit. This community with over 187k members is dedicated to sharing pics that just make people’s days, and the captions must always begin with, “Thanks, I love”. I appreciate how kind everyone is in this group, and I think you’re going to love their posts even more. Emmons, author of the book The Little Book of Gratitude: Create a life of happiness and wellbeing by giving thanks, “Gratitude is the ultimate performance-enhancing substance at work.” And he’s right. A study from Glassdoor found that, “80% of employees would be willing to work harder for an appreciative boss, and 70% said they’d feel better about themselves and their efforts if their boss thanked them more regularly.” Feedback at work is very important to know where you stand, but positive feedback is particularly vital to maintaining company morale. Another study of workers in the UK found that 40% of them would feel less motivated to work hard if their employers made no effort to thank them or make them feel appreciated. It's amazing how simple it is to boost employee motivation, just takes two little words.

When businesses say thank you, they’re not only benefiting their employees, but they might be benefiting their own profits in the long run. According to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, when a company spends even 1% of their payroll budget on showing appreciation to their employees, they are “more likely to perceive greater impacts on retention and financial outcomes”. Seems like a small price to pay for years of increased profits and a host of loyal employees and customers. So get to it business owners, start giving out those bonuses and thank you notes now before your staff starts feeling underappreciated.
