Non-Profit Transforming The Lives Of Children Through Music

I work with a non-profit that brings music education to Pre-K students in low-income schools in Houston, Texas and I LOVE WHAT I DO!

Instructors from the Prelude Music Foundation teach the Music Together® curriculum, a research-based music and movement program dedicated to early childhood education, to students on a weekly basis throughout the school year. These children get a fun, interactive music lesson each week where they get to dance, sing, be creative and express themselves. And, these music lessons are designed to stimulate and support their education. Since music supports all learning, these weekly music lessons not only stimulate the students' cognitive, language, and physical development but also support the development of their social and emotional skills as well as their executive functions. These students come to a class where music is used as an everyday teaching tool and enjoy learning, exploring, and discovering the wonders of language, math, science, and MUSIC!

We also have a partnership with the Houston Symphony and Mercury Chamber Orchestra where professional musicians visit each classroom once every semester and preform in a concert for the entire school. They bring their violin, viola, cello or bass to these classrooms and play songs that these children have been singing everyday in class as well as classics like Mozart! Like, seriously ... how AWESOME is that? These children, who often times have never seen a classical instrument up close, get to connect and bond with a professional musician from these prestigious organizations and have fun dancing to Mozart or Bach or an orchestral version of OutKast's "Hey Ya!".

During a time when funding for art and music programs are being cut, the Prelude Music Foundation is returning an essential facet of education--and life--to these children.

We are a relatively new organization, but since our founding in 2014, we have served over 2,643 students and will serve an additional 1,190 students this 2018-2019 school year.
