#21 This Is What Happens When People Submit Passive-Aggressive Office Memos Where I Work

The passive-aggressive note has a digital descendant that is just as devastating and much harder to laminate. "Per my last email," "as previously discussed," and "please advise" have become the workplace note's email equivalents, each one a masterpiece of professional fury.
A survey by Preply found that 44% of workers admit to using passive-aggressive phrases in professional emails, with "going forward" and "for future reference" ranking among the most commonly deployed. The sentiment is identical to anything taped to the breakroom microwave; the medium is just Microsoft Outlook.

What every note in this collection has in common is that it was written by someone who had reached a limit and found an outlet for it. Whether that outlet was healthy remains a matter for HR to resolve. The grievances are all petty, and the communication style is technically indefensible but utterly understandable. Nobody is proud of writing a passive-aggressive note, but no one is stopping either. The cycle continues, the notes accumulate, and the direct conversation remains firmly scheduled for never.
