Research on visual puzzles and cognition suggests that, even well into adulthood, keeping the brain engaged with puzzles has great cognitive benefits. According to a study by Nicola Ferreira, Adrian Owen, Anita Mohan, Anne Corbett, and Clive Ballard, frequent puzzle-solving is positively associated with better reasoning skills and memory in later stages of life. The researchers believe further investigation could help society develop tools and programs that delay or even prevent cognitive decline.
At the very least, puzzling is just fun. Getting a small hint of satisfaction with each correct answer you know in a crossword, each piece you fit into a jigsaw puzzle, or each Waldo you find greatly reduces stress and improves mental well-being. And since research suggests puzzles benefit people of all ages, you can use them to bond with family. Many already do!
How about you? Do you stay engaged with visual puzzles? What are your favorites? Share your experiences in the comments!
