A woman eating popcorn on a bed related to disturbing netizens confessions
I read a comment about one the other day where this lady that loved rice kept finding dried rice in her bed and would just eat it as a little snack, not even thinking about it.

She later found out that her cat had fleas and it was not rice. It was tape worm segments. I cringe a little bit every time I think about it now.

A soldier leaning against a heavy weapon, reflecting on disturbing confessions and harsh realities.
I worked for a medium sized company and one wintery Saturday morning the boss comes in with his coffee cup and sits next to my drafting table. It was only he and I in this big old building. He begins to tell me that had been a young Marine in WWII and was part of a 2 man bazooka team. They got caught in a skirmish where they didn’t have a clear line of fire but they loaded and fired anyway. As he fired one of his buddies raised his head and he accidentally shot him at close range. This happened 33 years before and as a young man I was, of course, speechless. His 2 sons worked in the business and because I was not sworn to secrecy the next week I mentioned what their dad had told me. The look on the son’s faces was of complete shock. A few days later the bosses wife called me at home and insisted I tell her everything he said. His family had no idea that this happened. She did say that when he left for war he was a happy-go-lucky guy and when he returned he was basically introverted and never talked about his experience, until one snowy Saturday at my desk. Still haunts me 50 years later.

A stressed man leaning his head on the steering wheel inside a car, connected to disturbing netizens confessions.
Honestly, the absolute most disturbing thing I’ve ever stumbled across online was a random, middle-of-the-night comment from someone casually admitting to a literal unsolved hit-and-run. I was down some late-night rabbit hole, and this anonymous user just dropped this bombshell that they’d unalived a mother and badly hurt her kid while drunk driving back in the mid-90s, saying they were only coming clean now because they figured the legal time limit to prosecute had passed. It was deeply unsettling to read, but the part that actually made my stomach drop was looking at the replies. Someone had gone out of their way to dig up a Los Angeles Times archive from July 1996, and the intersection, the timing, the victims—everything matched up flawlessly. But there was this incredibly weird twist: the old police report said the driver crashed and fled on foot, while the person posting claimed they panicked and sped off in their car. It completely messed with my head. You're left sitting there in the dark realizing you either just read the fragmented, guilt-twisted memories of an actual culprit, or some deeply sick individual who found an obscure 30-year-old tragedy and fabricated a firsthand account just for shock value. I honestly couldn't sleep for days after seeing that.

Keeping a secret can eat away at someone from the inside. Research has found that people often think about their secrets even when nobody has brought them up or asked about them.

The more frequently these thoughts return, the lower their reported well-being tends to be. Having something weighing on your mind can be exhausting, especially when you feel you have nowhere to talk about it.

A young boy looking solemn at a desk in a dark room, reflecting disturbing netizens confessions.
Saw a post where a guy threw a party with his brother (Brother 1 & 2), while his parents were out of town with Brother 3. They decided to throw a party since their parents weren’t home and it was the weeked, typical teenage stuff. During the party the house got absolutely trashed, and one of their friends got into Brother 3’s room and destroyed a poster he got via Make A Wish at a wrestling match/show that was signed by a ton of wrestlers, something like 15+ signatures. Brother 1 or 2 made a post asking Reddit if they could help him reach out John Cena to get another one. The general consensus in the comment was that while Cena’s known for being kind and helpful, he wasn’t going to help two teenagers who messed up and destroyed their brothers most prized possession. Not the most tragic story but it really made me sad for everyone involved.

A woman with red hair holding a suitcase outdoors reflecting netizen confessions
How about the woman who created a fake male identity and developed online relationships with several older women. One woman became so invested that she moved halfway across the country to meet the man who didn't exist.

Such a sad story.

A woman with a headscarf in bed receiving IV drip during a disturbing confession context
There was a post 3-4 ish years ago from a woman who thought so little of herself she didn't want to bother her husband with the fact that she was terminally ill of cancer, and even tried or intended to arrange that he could reconcile with the woman he considered the love of his life so that he'd be happy and cared for. I've never seen anyone making themselves so small, and the husband was a mean guy too, didn't ever treat her nicely. I felt so sad after reading that post. That woman absolutely never asked for anything for herself, not even while she was sick.

The internet makes it easier to share personal information without revealing your identity. A study on online anonymity found that people were generally more willing to disclose personal details when they could remain anonymous.

This might explain why someone who would never discuss a sensitive subject with friends or family could feel comfortable posting about it under a username. Without having to face someone's immediate reaction, admitting something personal can feel a little less intimidating.

A hand pouring red paint on a surface representing disturbing confessions
It wasn’t a confession. Just a post on the cleaning subreddit.

Someone posted photos of their basement and these dark stains that suspiciously looked a lot like blood stains and splatters. They were asking how to clean it up. People kept asking questions and the OP was dodging those. He said it was paint… but what was he painting? The walls had splatters and it got on the concrete floor too?? Who ends up with puddles of paint on the floor? I didn’t see what his painting project could have possibly been. Nothing else was painted. It was just regular concrete.

It was eerie.

A white and brown dog barking loudly, featured in netizens' confessions list.
I once saw a post where someone admitted they had been slowly envenoming their neighbor's dog over months because it barked too much. The casual way they described checking on it afterward was what stuck with me the most.

People sometimes share personal secrets because they need someone to talk to and help them make sense of what they've been through. Having someone listen without judging can ease some of that emotional weight and offer reassurance or a fresh perspective.

Mental health experts note that talking through difficult experiences can help people cope with stress. They also point out that being heard and understood can help someone feel less alone, even when the listener can't solve their problem.

A man walking up outdoor metal stairs of a building reflecting netizens confessions
I used to help out at a nursing home. This old Russian lady would relate the same tale over and over. Her husband drank and hit her. It was sad for sure.
But one day she leaned over and whispered "he was so drunk, so I pushed him down stairs. He lost his life."

"When I was three, my uncle caught me taking p**p out of the toilet with my hands, and eating it."
This was is really only disturbing because of who was involved. The person who told me this gem was my dental hygienist, while she had her hands in my mouth!

A woman washing dishes in a sink, representing domestic stories in netizens confessions.
There was a woman complaining about her marriage. She had preeclampsia and two young toddlers to take of and her husband yelled and screamed at her every day, forced her to do all the housework and child rearing, all while she got sicker and sicker. I think about that post a lot and wonder if she survived or is ok.

Hearing a shocking confession from someone you trust can leave you unsure how to respond. Research shows that being trusted with another person's secret can strengthen a relationship, but it can also become a burden.

You might care about the person and want to support them, but carrying information that troubles you and that you can't easily discuss with anyone else can be difficult.

People sometimes reveal someone else's secrets because they believe others deserve to know what happened. Research on why people expose others' secrets found that they were more likely to do so when they believed the person had behaved immorally.

Feelings of outrage can make someone feel that staying silent would mean allowing that behavior to go unchallenged. As a result, something shared privately can end up reaching a much wider audience.

A black dog standing in shallow ocean water illustrating netizens confessions
There was this chef i worked with who seemed like a pretty normal dude. He was an immigrant from Haiti

One day he brings up that he had to put his sick dog down when he was a kid. He said he did it himself since Haitians didn't have extensive access to medical care for people, much less animals.

He said he tied a rock to its neck and dropped it in the ocean.

That made it really hard to talk to him.
