Taiwanese artist Nelson Syndrome takes the recognizable and pushes it into a much stranger, and often funnier, direction. Famous paintings, historical scenes, food, household objects, and, above all, animals become the building blocks for illustrations that play with familiarity while rarely leaving things quite as we know them. Nelson has been interested in art since childhood and returned to creating after university. Since launching the Nelson Syndrome page in 2017, he has built up an eclectic body of work filled with animals, mythology, visual jokes, unusual creatures, and playful reinterpretations of familiar imagery.
Animals are especially prominent in his work, and small dogs often steal the show. Pugs, Chihuahuas, cats, birds, raccoons, and other creatures take on human roles, land in unexpected scenarios, or transform into something entirely different. A pug might become part of a piece of furniture, while another animal could find itself lounging inside a cup or taking the place of a recognizable figure from art history. Classical art provides particularly fertile ground for these experiments. Nelson reworks familiar compositions associated with artists such as Vermeer, Botticelli, Magritte, and others, replacing their original subjects with wide-eyed dogs and other unlikely characters. The result often keeps enough of the original composition intact to be recognizable while turning it into something much more absurd.
