#1 “Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) Over The Swiss Alps” By Jakob Sahner

And the shortlisted images show just how many different forms astrophotography can take. Martin Giraud carefully planned the alignment behind Supermoon Path Over Paris at Sunset, capturing the Full Moon rising dramatically beside the Eiffel Tower, while James McBeath turned fast-moving clouds into an atmospheric frame for the 2025 partial solar eclipse in Moody Partial Solar Eclipse. Elsewhere, Jennifer Rogers spotted what looked like an eagle spreading its wings within an aurora over Norway, and Ani Shastry transformed the stellar structures of Gum 37 into something resembling a colorful cosmic teapot.

#3 “The Savannah Tree” By Rafael Schmall

Some of the entries also reveal just how much patience and technical work can hide behind a single finished photograph. Jakob Sahner’s A Deep Look Into the Milky Way's Core, for example, became an approximately 750-megapixel mosaic after weeks of work and thousands of exposures, while 14-year-old photographer Lin Yuchen captured intricate sunspots, flares, filaments, and prominences across the Sun for the Young competition. Others bring the cosmos closer to familiar earthly scenes, placing the Milky Way above traditional Slovenian huts, a brilliant Moon among Seattle skyscrapers, or meteors over the landscape beneath the Big Dipper.

The suspense isn't over yet. The winners, runners-up, and highly commended entries will be revealed during a special online awards ceremony on September 17, 2026, when the overall ZWO Astronomy Photographer of the Year will also be crowned. The following day, September 18, the new exhibition will open at the National Maritime Museum in London, where the winning photographs will be displayed alongside a selection of shortlisted images.
