According to a survey conducted by MyPerfectResume, 45% of workers say they prefer fully remote roles, and another 33% favor a hybrid model, while only 22% want to work on-site.
"This preference," Escalera said, "is about more than just convenience in location. It is directly tied to well-being, work-life balance, and even performance. For example, the same MyPerfectResume survey found that 39% of employees report being most productive when working remotely. Eliminating commutes and allowing employees to customize their workspace and schedule for maximum comfort and focus clearly leads not only to increased productivity but also to higher-quality work."

But no arrangement is perfect. "Some of the biggest challenges remote workers face include feeling a lack of connection, having trouble standing out, and finding opportunities for growth and advancement," the career expert said.
"Without the daily in-person interactions of an office, many remote workers struggle with feelings of isolation and a sense of disconnection from colleagues, which can negatively impact their morale and mental health. Additionally, gaining recognition and visibility can be difficult when working remotely."

Escalera said many remote workers would like to be noticed more by their managers and, in turn, considered for promotions. Falling short in this area can lead to feelings of being undervalued and overlooked.
"Career development can also be complex, with remote employees often having less access to mentorship, skill-building opportunities, and direct feedback, making professional growth feel impossible," she explained.

"To overcome these challenges, remote workers can be more proactive about connecting with colleagues through regular check-ins and virtual team events. Remote employees can also request that their company support their professional development through online courses or mentorship opportunities, ensuring they stay current in their careers. Still, a recent survey from MyPerfectResume shows that an overwhelming majority (68%) of employees believe flexible work options improve their mental health.
"This is significant because better mental health leads to less burnout, greater job satisfaction, and a more positive workplace culture overall," Escalera said.

Another MyPerfectResume report found that 79% of employees feel detached from their work. Because of this:

- 28% prioritize career growth opportunities.
So ultimately, it's not just the remote workers whom the companies should strive to retain, but all of us.
"When employees feel supported and are given the opportunity to balance their work and personal lives, they are more engaged, productive, and motivated," Escalera said.
