When someone says, "Oh kids will be kids." or "Boys will be boys" when their kids are acting up just respond with "Parents should be parents".

In a high school classroom, one of the "popular" girls was picking on one of the "quiet" guys. The teacher chimed in, saying "You should be nice to him. He might be your boss one day." The guy responded with "No, I don't plan on becoming a pimp.".
While we might have to shoot comebacks once in a while, it's pretty common in middle-class French society. Believe it or not, they have a thriving culture of battling wits and even train their children to face off against opponents in school.
"Where Americans might coo over a child’s most inane remark, to boost his confidence, middle-class French parents teach their kids to be concise and amusing, to keep everyone listening," writes Pamela Druckerman, an American-French writer and journalist living in Paris.

He spoke up in class one day about something and a rather hefty girl said "Oh shut up Turtle. Why don't you grow a chin". A few seconds passed and then Turtle replied "Why don't you just give me one of yours?".

VP: "Mr. Teacher, it has come to my attention that you have absolutely no control over this class! This is unacceptable."
Teacher gives him a fairly nonchalant stare, cooly and calmly places his book down, and claps his hands loudly three times (which was his very effective way of getting our attention while listening to music). Mind you, the following occurred without us knowing why the VP was there or what he had said.
Teacher: "Ok class listen up, I have an exercise for you. This'll only take a few moments. First and foremost, everybody stand up."
We all stood up in near unison very quickly.
Teacher: "Good, now I want all of you to leave the room and stand outside in the hallway and no matter what this guy says," as he points his finger at VP, "do not come back in the room until I say so. Ok, go!"
We all exit the room, a little intrigued by what was going on.
Teacher: "Ok VP, bring them back in the classroom"
We didn't budge
To this day, that is one of my favorite stories to tell.
In fact, this battle of wits was pretty popular in the court of Versailles, right before the French Revolution. Apparently, courtiers gained status for their display of esprit, which was a witty way of ridiculing their rivals. Also, they would look foolish if they suffered from l’esprit de l’escalier, or the inability to think of the perfect comeback.
It was also a reliable way to get the King's attention when people needed an audience with him, as he stayed attuned to this trend. We are a long way off from those days, but witty comebacks are still going strong in making an impression.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a Collision.
Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.
Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.
Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.
Americans: This is the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln, the second largest ship in the United States' Atlantic fleet. We are accompanied by three destroyers, three cruisers and numerous support vessels. *I demand that YOU change your course 15 degrees north, that's one five degrees north, or countermeasures will be undertaken to ensure the safety of this ship.*
Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

"No, I got it right the first time.".
Social skills coach Patrick King explains on a podcast that a quick-witted retort makes people laugh and disarms them, while making you appear smart, insightful, and mentally quick.
"It also shows people that you’re easygoing and can handle hurdles that come your way. When most people are insulted or made fun of, they either respond with anger or try to play it down. With a witty comeback, you’re showing others that such remarks don’t faze you nearly as much as they would someone else," he adds.

Coworker notified us he's coming in for work a little late - they were trying to have a baby and his wife thought that day needed to be a day they tried based on her cycle and all that.
lead says "fine [name], we don't mind you showing up 30 seconds late. Good luck!"
Crew died laughing.
Well, just like me, not everyone is adept at coming up with the funniest comebacks. Research says that it has a lot to do with our temporal lobe and prefrontal cortex. Apparently, funny people rely on the temporal lobe to instantly connect ideas without trying, which usually leads to a funny joke or retort.
Meanwhile, others use the prefrontal cortex, which basically forces their brains to plan out a joke step by step instead of just letting the humor flow naturally. However, that doesn't mean less-funny people can't retaliate with humor because experts believe it's entirely possible with practice.

Me in response: well you know what they say like father like son.

She places two slices of chocolate cake, beautifully decorated, from a nice bakery.
"Now daughter, this is you with your virginity..."
She then squashes one slice of cake with her hand.
"And this is you without your virginity. What slice of cake would you rather give to your future husband, for time and all eternity?"
I look back and forth between the cakes
"But, mom...they taste the same..."
My older sister still loves to bring this up. It may be a funnier story when told out loud, though.

Listening is a very useful skill that helps form a winning retort at the perfect time. Abigail Paul, the artistic director at the Theatre Language Studio in Frankfurt, says that "people think faster than others speak, giving the listener 'extra time' to compose an answer, even while they give the appearance of still listening to what the other person is saying."
She stresses that a huge part of listening is that you really have to be willing to be changed by what's being said. After all, you can't really retaliate if you don't understand the full extent of it.

Anyways, we were on a long road trip when he called me this. About 30 minutes later he started to complain about his bum hurting from the long ride and without missing a beat, I said "And you called me gay?". My dad had to pull the truck over because he was laughing so hard that he had tears coming out.

His response? "Yeah, but at least they'll be able to carry my coffin.".
Experts also highlight that clever comebacks are very different from mean comments. I mean, there's a very thin line between being sarcastic and being rude, and witty people know that their retort should not be an insult that causes extreme pain to someone.
It can feel like a "mini slap to the face," and it really stings, especially when someone is mocked in public. Studies emphasize that verbal insults trigger a cascade of consecutive and overlapping processing effects, and different parts of the cascade may be differently affected by repetition, resulting in a consistently strong emotional response over time.
