Many people consider cooking for someone their love language. After all, preparing a meal is an effective way to show affection, care, and a desire to make someone feel at home.
But what happens when the recipient of that loving gesture doesn’t like it? For married couples, it could shake the foundation of the relationship. That is what seems to have happened in today’s story: the man expressed his strong dislike for his wife’s cultural cuisine, which she also enjoys cooking.
What followed was a difficult conversation that drastically changed their dynamic as husband and wife.

“Food divorces” are a real thing, and it is a compromise many couples have agreed with
Opposing food preferences may not seem like a huge marriage problem, but they've strained many couples. That’s why many have opted for a food divorce as a compromise.
Journalist, physician, and digital health expert Bruce Y. Lee described it, and it was exactly what the couple in the story went through. But as he noted, food divorces can differ depending on how they're implemented.
“One end of the spectrum is still eating together but often eating completely different things while maintaining joint custody over some things like special desserts,” Lee explained. “The other end of the spectrum is when the two of you do all food things completely independently and separately.”
While it may seem like a sensible middle ground for couples who aren’t in sync with their food preferences, does it negatively affect the marriage? According to marriage and family therapist Emily Longo, eating separately would be a better solution than having meals together that cause tension.
“If a food divorce eliminates the stress that shared meals and prepping meals together creates, that would be healthier for that couple rather than forcing what they think they ‘should be doing’ or what is ‘normal,’ and what ‘other couples are doing,’” Longo told Real Simple.
Spending quality time should be the priority for couples who are on “food divorces”
As Longo also mentioned, couples who don’t share meals together can also spend quality time doing other things, which should be their priority.
“It could be a morning cup of coffee, a walk, sitting together before bed, or another predictable ritual each day that preserves the connection between partners,” she said, adding that it should be about the moments that communicate one message either verbally or otherwise: “You’re important to me.”
Meanwhile, Lee also emphasized the potential risk of food divorces in a relationship, especially if they lead to other issues. That’s why he advises making sure other aspects of the relationship are solid before “divorce proceedings.”
“Just make sure any desire or plan for a food divorce is not divorced from the reality of the rest of your relationship,” he said.
It may benefit the couple to have a “food divorce,” as long as this separation won’t affect their marriage as a whole.
