Long story short: I was pet sitting my nieces animals and one of her inside cats somehow got out. I called her on her trip and assured her he was only in the back yard and I would get him. She royally flipped out on me for letting him out when I in fact did not let him out. I stayed up all night trying to coax him in. She caught a flight home to help. 8 hours later, she told me to go home and she would get him in when she got there in a couple of hours. When she got home, he was deceased in the back yard! My niece refuses to talk to me now!! She is understandably upset and so was I! He was my little nephew kitty! I have watched her pets for 8 years with zero incident as well. I am sick over the way she treated me and now refusing any contact. Like I had something to do with his death. It has me straight depressed. What would you do?

Give her some room to heal. Losing a dear pet is very hard and people can lash out to others even if they are innocent.
Maybe wait a few days/week and write a text to her explaining her all what happened. How sorry you are that the animal died. How the animal got out without you wanting it and how you tried to rescue it. Remind her that you were a responsible petsitter for years and you should be given the benefit of the doubt.
Then let her. She will probably come around and apologize for being so angry. But if she doesnt that is her choice.
