It was the summer of 1966 around mid-August; I was 11 years old. I had bugged my mom to camp out on the river with my cousin Jack, he was 12 and my twin brother Billy also 11.
We had an old canvas that we had strung up with poles, stocked it with chips and drinks and few comic books with flashlights to keep us busy.
Around 11pm the other two had decided it was hot, clammy and uncomfortable in the tent and they decided to walk the 30 yds back to the house and catch a good night’s sleep.
Being stubborn and since I had been somewhat of a pain to do a campout, I stayed, tried to sleep but had that creepy feeling that I was being watched.
I woke up sometime around 1 am to the sound of heavy thumping like footsteps around the tent and called out figuring it was the other two coming back.
I grabbed a flashlight and a blanket and stood at the entrance to the makeshift tent.
There was nothing there, but to my left, from an alley between my family house and the neighbor’s a figure emerged that was all black and looked at me with red eyes and it was running at me, and it was big. I could hear the steps as it ran, it was heavy and fast and then went silent. The figure veered off and I could see it outlined against the glow of a streetlight at the clubhouse beach, there was no moon, it was dark. I could see the outline of a human like figure that looked something like the Silver Surfer Marvel comics character, but black, it passed between me and the light about 50 ft.
It leaped, stretched out its arms to dive into the river, but there was no sound. I heard no splash. I believe it flew rather than dove into the water and I was frozen in fear.
I ran to the house wrapped in the blanket, closed and locked the screen door and locked the inside house door from the porch. I kept asking myself did I actually see this or imagine it, but the fear was real. It still is.
I said that I saw something last night at breakfast the next day but was made fun of and stopped talking about it.
until now. Have you ever seen anything like this, if so, what is it?
