Ooty also was known as Udhagamandalam, is one of the most beautiful hill stations of India, situated in the lap of Nilgiri hills in Tamil Nadu, in the Southern part of the country. The hill station witnesses a huge number of tourists every year, last year in 2017, the census of tourists visiting it, went up to 32.69 lakhs, recording a 1.5 lakh of growth than the previous year. This count keeps on increasing every year.
The two main attractions of Ooty are its century-old Botanical Garden and the artificially constructed Ooty lake. Although the history of the lake also goes back to the 19th century.
Botanical Garden is a place which is known to attract people of all ages. It is also known for the flower shows that are organized every year, which is one of the very reputed events.
Ooty lake was artificially constructed in 1824 by John Sullivan.
He dammed the water streams flowing down the mountains and gave it a form of a lake which is now one of the famous tourist places to visit across the country. The boathouse situated at the lake houses many paddle boats, row boats and motor boats for tourists. It has over the time been developed well by the State's tourism board and now earns quite a revenue for the state.
Nilgiris have a pleasant climate with mountain ranges covered with tall green trees providing us a view of sunset comparable to none making it a very pleasant view. The cool breeze blowing there when touches your naked skin makes you feel refreshed and forget the heats of the plains. This is the reason for Ooty being also known as 'the Queen of Hills'. Nilgiris are also Paradise for trekkers, in whichever direction you go you can find a great number of people trekking the Nilgiris.
The tea estates in Ooty also makes it a great place of travel. Beautiful mountains, dense forests, grasslands, and tea gardens spread over an area till where the eyes can see. This scenic beauty welcomes the tourist making them forget all of their tiring travel. Also, an annual Tea festival is organized in which Tea lovers from all over the world come to this festival, which must be on the bucket list of every tea lover.
The town may be seen influenced by the British culture, also the architecture of the town also reminds of an old English village. This is the reason behind the economy of town mostly based on the business of tourism. It was initially developed by Britishers only, during the colonial period as they found the climate here very soothing and relieving because they did not use to the hot and humid climate of India.
Finding such a climate was not less than finding a treasure for them, which also made it a summer or weekend getaway among the British. The town also was a summer capital of the Madras Presidency.
