This year I'll be opening my art studio to the public for the 3rd time in June 2019 as part of Surrey Artists' Open Studios. Like many artists, my art studio is actually a room in my house, and I open up part of the house with my colourful animal art painting displays.
So what happens when artists open their studios?
So far there hasn't been a queue outside my house when I open the gate. Instead there are usually a few people at a time visiting my colourful animal art during opening hours, many of them going to several of the nearly 300 artists taking part in the Open Studios event in Surrey.
You get to see where and how artists produce their work, and watch them working on their latest artwork. Unlike most high street galleries, you can meet the artist in person and talk about what inspires them or ask questions about their art practice. Or just look quietly at the artwork if that’s more your style.
I'm always happy to talk to anyone who visits about art, life and the universe. I usually run free competitions during Surrey Artists’ Open Studios so you could win an original animal painting or print by answering a simple question or two about my art.
Entry is free and there is no pressure to buy anything – artists are happy for you to just enjoy their work, but they don't live on air, so if you want to buy a print or greeting card they will be happy to help you with your purchase.
You can also support your favourite artists by signing up to their mailing list. Why not follow them on Facebook or Instagram, and comment or share some of their posts to show your friends what good taste you have?
If you're looking for art for a specific place in your home, measure the space before you set out to make life easier for yourself, and maybe have some photos of it on your phone. If you find an artwork you like, you might be able to take it on trial – I'm always happy to sell an original painting on 14 days’ trial, with a full refund available if it is returned in an undamaged saleable condition.
Don't be scared to ask artists about about other sizes, colours, subjects and prices – they may have other paintings or sculptures that are not on display. Or you may excited by the idea of a custom artwork that no-one else will have (it doesn't need to be expensive).
Wherever you live, enjoy looking at the work of talented artists at Open Studios.
Surrey Artists’ Open Studios (SAOS) takes place in June each year. In 2019 there are nearly 300 artists taking part between 1st and 16th June 2019 – see my website (www.carolineskinnerart.co.uk/exhibitions) for my opening dates and location of my Merstham studio, or check out the full SAOS programme at www.surreyopenstudios.org.uk
During Surrey Artists’ Open Studios, if you visit 4 studios you could win a voucher worth £150 to spend with an artist of your choice. Just ask each artist to sign your brochure, and vote for your favourite artist.
Come and visit me in Merstham, Surrey this June – if the weather is good, I’ll be the one painting in the garden!
