Bored Panda got in touch with Tarren Brady, one of the admins behind “Weird stuff on official accounts” and he was kind enough to answer some of our questions. Naturally, we were curious to hear just how the group got started in the first place.
“As for inspiration on the creation of the group, none of the current admin team can answer that. Jack Goult created the group 6 years ago, but he has long disappeared and has not interacted in the group in years. Dominique and I ran the group by ourselves on and off for a while until I brought in the rest of the admins who are friends of mine and a team for another few groups we have together.”
The group boasts membership in six figures, so we were curious to hear why Tarren thought so many folks were drawn to its somewhat unhinged content. “The main thing that keeps the group so active and engaging is some of the wild stuff posted by official accounts. Almost all posts in the group are submitted by group members.”
“Some brands have decided to capitalize on the popularity that these odd posts bring them, while others are just plain wild and like to stir the pot. Sometimes brands think something is perfectly normal and it just isn't taken by the public how they hoped it would,” he shared with Bored Panda.
“We get surges of members joining where some days 20 people will want to join, and others we get 1k+ in a day. As long as official accounts keep posting weird [stuff] online, we will keep sharing it in here for everyone to laugh at!” After all, fail content is the bread and butter of the internet, people just can’t get enough of it.
He shared some final thoughts on the people that made the group possible in the first place. “The group is a lot of work quarreling with so many people with so many different beliefs, especially some weird official posts that are controversial, but are a team. None of this would be possible without the help of Heather, Aphaea, Kaz H., Steven S., Nathan, Kaz W., and Steven C.”
