Before we look at the odd things people share online, it’s useful to think about what makes us laugh in the first place. Humor usually happens when something breaks our expectations but still feels safe. A joke might surprise us, make us question what’s normal, or show us something familiar in a new way.
Not every funny moment needs a smart punchline. Sometimes, humor comes from something unexpected or a situation that feels a bit off but isn’t actually harmful. That’s also why two people can see the same joke and react in totally different ways.
Humor has long depended on surprise, but younger generations are now finding new ways to use it online. Gen Z often prefers content without traditional punchlines, choosing instead deliberate nonsense, strange visuals, and inside jokes that can puzzle those outside their online communities.
Brainrot content is a clear example of this change. In interviews with 24 people aged 13 to 26, many said this kind of entertainment helps them escape, connect with others, and enjoy something visually different. Instead of searching for a deeper meaning, some young people just like content that ignores normal logic.
People who enjoy unconventional comedy are often drawn to absurdist humor, which intentionally breaks the usual rules of stories and conversations. A weird comment, a surprising reply, or a scene that makes no sense can challenge our urge to understand what’s happening. Sometimes, that confusion is what makes it interesting.
Absurd situations can make people look for meaning when things don’t follow the usual pattern. In studies using Kafka’s stories, a Monty Python parody, and abstract art, people wanted more structure after seeing certain types of absurd content. How strong this effect was depended in part on what they expected before.
When absurd humor appears online, people can turn it into something others recognize, share, and adapt. Memes are more than just funny pictures or videos; they give users a shared reference point they can change to express ideas, experiences, and feelings that others in their community understand.
This shared language can help people connect around a common identity. When thousands of users made their own versions of the It Gets Better videos, they reused familiar parts and added their own messages. This trend showed how online communities can create a collective voice through content that people copy and change.
Memes help humor spread in new ways that don’t follow the usual joke format. Many online posts use silly word combinations, sudden interruptions, or images with unrelated text. People enjoy these posts because of how oddly the parts fit together, not because they tell a story with a setup and punchline.
Researchers found five common types: linguistic silliness, embodied silliness, pastiche, dislocations, and interruptions. These styles show that online creators can turn content that seems meaningless into something people notice and share. Even if a post doesn’t make much sense, it can still connect users.
People don’t just use humor when something seems silly. A joke or funny comment can help with daily frustrations, awkward times, and stress. Laughing about a problem can shift someone’s perspective and give them some space from the situation.
A study found that those with a stronger sense of humor felt less stress and anxiety, even though they faced just as many daily problems as others. They also used positive thinking and problem-solving more often. This suggests that humor can help people handle tough situations with a new outlook.
But not everything unusual is funny. Sometimes a joke crosses a social line, challenges what people expect, or makes someone uneasy. How people react depends a lot on how they see the situation. What seems harmless to one person might feel offensive or out of place to someone else.
A theory explains this difference. Humor often happens when something breaks a social rule or expectation but still feels safe. Things like context, culture, and the relationship between people all play a role. That’s why one person might laugh at a strange post while someone else just finds it odd.
Humor doesn't always need a clever punchline or a logical explanation to make someone laugh. Sometimes, the more confusing a post is, the harder it is to forget.
