Hi All! We are BioToy, makers of Bioluminescent toys! [well, toy right now] We just launched our first toy, the SplashLight. It is a water blaster that blasts glowing water! The water glows all on its own, using the ReLumes (bioluminescent fuel) no batteries, lasers, or blacklights needed. How is this possible? While it looks like magic! It is actually all science. It started with a dream to share the magical world of bioluminescence to all of us land dwellers that are not living in an area with fireflies or glow worms.
What is this "bioluminescence" we keep mentioning? and why do we say land dwellers? Bioluminescence is when living creatures make their own light. You can think of it as "bio-" meaning life and "-luminescence" meaning light giving. And, because 90% of the ocean is full of bioluminescent creatures. There are only a few on land, such as the aforementioned firefly.
How does it the SplashLight work? Glad you asked! We took a big lesson for nature, and learned what proteins are needed in the bioluminescent reaction. It turns out there are 2 main ingredients, both of which we make in our laboratories. [We grow the protein the same way beer or yogurt is made.] The two ingredients are kept in separate chambers within the SplashLight, and come together at the nozzle to create a stream of glowing water for you to drench you friends, parents, or just your back yard!
