Residents of facilities in the Victorian Senior Care network have spent a long time under strict quarantine, not being able to see their friends and families. Isolation can be tough on anyone, but for senior citizens, such times can feel increasingly lonely. But after the nursing home network shared a call for pen pals on their Facebook back in June, the isolated elders now enjoy the long-distance company of thousands of people from all over the world.
In the now-viral Facebook post, assisted living home residents sat holding up signs that specified what they were looking for in their pen pal. Some wanted pals with shared interests, while others wanted to connect with people from particular places that were meaningful to them. But one thing applied to all the residents—the response that they received was overwhelming. "It's like Christmas,” Donna Horton, an administrator at Phoenix Assisted Care, told the media. “You know, there's really no way to explain the joy of giving them letters, packages, flowers, cookies, candy, coloring books. It's phenomenal.”
