2016 has delighted us with lots of incredible exhibitions, but 2017 seems to be a promising year for European museums. They are preparing great shows that will take the viewer to the magical realm of artists beyond compare.
Here are some of the shows that I want to see this year while traveling through Europe.
ARP GEHR MATISSE
This exhibition is displaying for the first time the work of the twentieth-century artist Ferdinand Gehr, who worked in Switzerland, in the context of the international avant-garde. His unusual work can be seen from March 11th to August 27th 2017 at Kunstmuseum in Switzerland.
DAVID HOCKNEY EXHIBITION
For his 80th birthday, David Hockney will exhibit his work at Tate Britain from February 9th to May 29th, 2017. His work from over six decades will be featured and the showcase will include video, photography, paintings and prints that provide a full retrospective from the British legend of Pop and Modern Art. The surprise of this exhibition will consist in new and unseen paintings by the artist.
You can delight with the full Hockney experience, his lovely drawings, prints and experimental photography. This exhibition is a once-in-a-lifetime show.
BRUCE CONNER – “IT’S ALL TRUE”
Guested in Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, Spain from February 22nd to May 22nd, the “It’s all true” showcase by Bruce Conner is the artist’s first major survey in sixteen years and was one of the best exhibitions of the summer in New York.
The exhibition is composed of over 250 artworks, gathering European-infused paintings and assemblages, besides experimental film and hybrid pieces created with different techniques and motifs.
THE BODY IN MOVEMENT: DANCE AND THE MUSEUM
At the Petite Galerie du Luvre, you can visit the exhibition that perfectly combines the world of choreography and visual art. “The body movement: dance and the museum” gathers over 70 artworks coming from antiquity to the 20th Century. The showcase, co-curated by Benjamin Millepied, the choreographer of the psychological thriller Black Swan, digs deep into dance, by giving attention to body movement in all its forms.
ROBOTS
A very interesting exhibition that can be seen at the Science Museum in London from February 8th to September 3rd is placing robots coming from Renaissance automata to the latest attempts to replace humanity. The art of Leonardo da Vinci is one huge experiment in science fiction, including the mechanical monster that was made by da Vinci in the early 1500s to impress the king of France. Jacob Epstein’s sculpture The Rock Drill that emphasizes a terrifying droid is also displayed in this collection. Besides sculptures and artists, “ROBOTS” includes the work of writers such as Rossunm’s Universal Robots book written in 1920 by the Czech writer Karel Capek.
MICHELANGELO AND SEBASTIANO
A showcase that exhibit the collaboration and intimate friendship between Michelangelo and Sebastiano del Piombo can be visited at National Gallery in London, Great Britain from March 15th to June 25th. The centerpieces of this exhibition are the Pietà for San Francisco in Viterbo and the Raising of Lazarus, painted for the Cathedral of Narbonne. Michelangelo and Sebastiano met in Rome in 1511 and their mostly long distance relationship continued until 1534, until an acrimonious falling-out.
