I made a double duty desk out of hard woods and blue leather; the desk rises and falls to carry out its different functions.
The TIDE Desk - facilitates both work and recreation in a convenient folding design. The aim of this product is to increase the efficiency of space; this desk serves as a seating and reading corner at the same time as having the capability to be a fully functioning desk at will.
The blue desk surface rises and falls into and out of place when the user needs to use it. When you lift the top up, the attached mechanism lifts the blue leather desk surface up which then can be locked into place. When the desk is being moved the surface remains horizontal; the desk can therefore be moved down and out of the way without the need to remove any items off the surface.
This modern design is infused with amounts of tradition through the use of materials. Traditional furniture used hardwoods like Oak and Walnut and many old desks and bureaus had leather inlays. By using these materials in my design I have maintained the link between two eras of furniture design, and have pushed the design further.
Design drawing of the project to come.

The underside of the top could be used as a notice board. This allows a very immersive working environment.
Oak and Walnut used against a Blue Streak

The Blue streak was a veneer added during manufacture.
Pivot nuts and bolts

Made myself on the Centre Lathe to ensure the desk would rise smoothly.
Once the desk was constructed

Once in place I could show the possibilities of the project

I drew little people onto images of the project to imagine all the possibilities that it could be used for.
Ghost image of movement

There is a very swift movement between the two functions of the project.
Final Project

Using the Final project and decorating the area like the notice board I'd envisioned.
