"For every fall of Lindsay Lohan, there is a Bernini sculpture begging to be referenced."
This is the bio description of Tabloid Art History. In the posts on the Twitter page, celebrity images appear side by side with close-ups of iconic artwork, such as the photo of Kanye West taking a picture of Kim Kardashian and the couple's daughter, Compared to a detail of the painting Las Meninas, by the Spanish Diego Velàsquez.
The project was created in November 2016 by Chloe Esslemont and Elise Bell, art students at the University of Edinburgh, alongside art historian Mayanne Soret. In addition to the profile on Twitter, the trio started selling collages and other printed works with the same idea, which fights the status of art as an exclusive and distant category of pop culture.
"It's important to question the notion of art history as a bastion of good taste and high class in 2017, when we still have to fight for diversity within art, still stuck to portraying people within the pattern," explains Elise.
Today the page has more than two thousand followers and the team went to work for a zine of Can't Win Don't Try, London project engaged in the democratization of art.
