My name is Jose Luis Haces. I was born in Mexico but I’ve lived abroad for more than eleven years now; I’ve just recently returned from my hometown for the holidays, after 8 years.
Veracruz (on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico) is where I am from and where I went back to. Being abroad for so many years makes you a stranger . You know you don’t belong anymore, and you see everything quite differently. Things that once were normal to you now seem odd; sometimes you feel you are watching a documentary on TV but since you know your way around, you are able to capture the general atmosphere from a unique angle.
This photography work has as a purpose, to portray what a local can see, focusing on what a foreign would be interested in.
The question this work may raise is: Does photography represent the reality?
Of course it does. Of course it doesn’t.
I hope you enjoy it.
