Choosing to eat organic foods has become an important factor in the lives of many Australians, with the latest Australian Organic Market Report finding the nation’s organic industry is worth $2.4 billion Australian dollars.
Emily McWaters, CEO of The Hamper Emporium, shares her tips on the importance of eating organic foods, and how to implement the use of organic foods in your business.
Why is it important to shop organic?
When food is ‘organic’ it means that it is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, GMO’s, petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage sludge-based fertilizers.
For meat, egg and dairy products, the animals must be fed organic foods and no antibiotics, growth hormones or animal by-products to be classified as organic.
The latest Australian Organic Market Report found personal health is one of the leading drivers for primary shoppers buying organic. However, choosing to eat organic is not just beneficial to a person’s mental and physical health, but to the environment as well.
How can you start using organic food in your business?
Australia is home to approximately 60% of the world’s certified organic land, so there is no shortage of organically grown foods in the country, making it easily accessible for Australian businesses.
A fantastic way for businesses to have the most control over their product is to grow their own organic produce. By choosing to grow your own produce, costs are cut by avoiding going through a third party, and you know exactly how the product has been grown.
The Hamper Emporium have their own truffle farm in Kangaroo Island, as well as their own Black Angus Cattle farm.
If you’re a business who doesn’t have the time or resources to grow produce, a great option is to join a food co-op or a CSA farm where you have a membership and can be offered lower prices for good quality, locally sourced organic food.
