Prometheus Labs, created by Bristol-based artist Waxbones, is a wonderfully weird and creepy #NFT project, with equal emphasis on story and art.
Waxbones’ unique and distinctive art style sets this project apart and brings the Abominations to life. Each Abomination is divided into four quadrants, each of which can carry different traits, making countless possibilities for these spooky creations.
Waxbones describes his project as “an art-focused and story-driven generative project that uses a really unique minting experience to put the control of what the NFT looks like in the hands of the collector itself.”
Waxbones has emphasized the importance of narrative-building in this project. He commented that “the story came first, and then the art started to develop around it.” The lore, set in first person to pull you into the story, is positively creepy: you discover the failed experiments of “The Modern Prometheus” in the basement of his lab. These creatures are aptly titled Abominations
he project draws from multiple sources for inspiration. Waxbones was largely inspired by sci-fi and horror, such as Alien and Guillermo del Toro. As the name suggests, the project is also heavily influenced by Frankenstein - “The Modern Prometheus” was actually the original name of Frankenstein. Additionally, Waxbones drew from his experience working on a Greek mythology-based project, as Prometheus is a Greek myth. These pieces came together to create a project that is perfectly “weird and wonderful”.
The mint is especially unique because holders are able to re-roll their Abomination’s four quadrants on the mint site, “put[ing] the control of what the NFT looks like in the hands of the collector itself”. This re-roll feature fits with the story, allowing each collector to be their very own Prometheus. The Abominations are constantly evolving as well: new traits are added in and old traits are retired, keeping things fresh and exciting.
As the market fluctuates, Waxbones has developed a more flexible, adaptable roadmap to accommodate its changes. Perks and rewards are constantly being developed and evolved, from merch to events to other perks for holders.
On the horizon, look out for new collaborations and airdrops, as well as constantly evolving traits as more are added and old ones are taken out of rotation.
When asked to give advice to new artists in the space, Waxbones emphasized the importance of staying true to yourself and sticking with your ideas, regardless of what people say. As he said, “if something’s worth doing, it’s worth doing it right.”
