Some years ago, I started making random flavored cheese cakes. Orange creamsicle using Tang powder, or Apple Pie flavored.. you name it. I wanted to learn to make my own goodies because sometimes, it's too expensive to buy at a store, or restaurant. Plus, homemade is so much better, and making food that tickles the taste buds is always a plus with the ladies! I moved onto pies, and other foods that were a little more challenging. There has been quite a bit of trial and error, but also a lot of success.
When I made something I was proud of, I would post pictures to Facebook, and people would eat it up. I would post pictures of steak, muffins, you name it. I made people hungry. I guess my best friends, John and Kenny, saw it because they discussed how I should start my own show. He said I should name it "Cooking Goth" I told John I was thinking of starting a cheesecake vlog.
We talked for a couple years about making a sizzle reel and pitching the idea to TV networks. We never got around to doing so. One day, John told me I should make an Instagram. I took his advice, but also made a YouTube channel. I added "The" to the title because I felt like just calling it "Cooking Goth" would say to people that I only make goth food, which would limit my creativity. The approach I wanted to take was to be a goth guy making Martha Stewart types of food.
Another reason for creating the show, I wanted to show people they, too, make make amazing food. I wanted them to see that it's not as hard as they think it is. It can be very difficult, but not impossible. People need to see that you don't have to be a trained chef in order to make something you love. Part of the time, I'm learning right along with the viewers.
A few videos in, I started to make reviews on kitchen utensils and tutorials on how to care for them. Made a few videos where I show how season thing like cast iron skillets and wooden spoons.
I also started doing food reviews from my car. One day, I posted one I did for the Hardee's Garlic Bread Thickburger. I posted the video on the FAIRMONT COMMUNITY group, a Facebook group dedicated to the town of Fairmont, WV. That night it started to go viral just around the town. I watched the views skyrocket to 1,000. I was shocked!
People liked my videos so much that they contacted a journalist from the local news station, WBOY, and they came to my house for a story. I showed the journalist, Abigail, how I made cereal bars with Good Guys cereal from the Child's Play movies. Basically, almost how you'd make Rice Krispies Treats.
I usually cannot go to work anymore without someone complimenting my videos. I am deeply appreciative of everyone who likes them. Making my YouTube food channel has been a very rewarding experience!
