42 Times People Had A Terrible Gut Feeling And Later Learned Exactly Why

Most of our decisions and choices are made consciously, with some time, planning, and effort, but there are certain feelings that just come about without us even really thinking about them, like intuition. When folks experience this ‘inner voice,’ some listen to it, while others ignore it when they’re feeling uncertain.
To really shine a light on this process, someone on X asked people about their scariest gut feelings that they actually followed through on and what happened then. Most of these stories are scary to actually think about, but they show the true power of the sixth sense.

Group of people gathered indoors near an open doorway during a tense moment
I actually listened to my gut almost too late.

In college, I went to a house party with a friend. They were his friends,’ no one else I really knew. I thought I had my own safety under control - brought my own booze and drive myself, so I could get away on my own if necessary.

I had several guy friends back then, and I’d known this guy pretty well for a couple years. He gave zero creep vibes in any of that time.

As the party moved to the basement for drinking games, I just chilled on the old couch while guys and girls I didn’t know played games, paired off, iykwim, general party stuff that gets a little out of hand late in to the night/early morning.

A couple of guys chilled on the couch next to me. We weren’t even really interacting. Just watching the carnage, but I was drinking my own stuff. I was just my normal, happy drunkish self, but not loaded. One of the guys handed me my last drink. It was my last because I said so and that I needed to be heading out soon. I knew it was time to stop and get my head clear to get home. I’m not a person who ever drank in to oblivion.

I suddenly felt very f**ked up. My body was almost numb. My head was actually pretty clear, but everything else was not working properly. I realized I was in trouble.

I decided that since I couldn’t move correctly, I was going to lean in to be being blasted and get someone to direct me to the bathroom, because no one wants to do anything to a girl who might be on the verge of throwing up. The two guys next to me did get me to the bathroom. And they just waited there.

So, I came back out, they were right on top of me. I didn’t have anything with me except my car keys in my jeans, so I basically stopped at every person we crossed paths with. I got some girl who was in full on crying mode about something, so I played along like we were great friends and had to do girl talk. As soon as the two guys stepped away to avoid drama, I encouraged the girl to go upstairs with me where we could talk. I didn’t know her from Adam, but I doubt she even knew that.

We basically crawled up the basement steps. I felt I was getting worse and knew I had to get out of there. I tried to get her to go with me, but her boyfriend was there and she wasn’t leaving.

I found the front door and crawled to my car, got in, and randomly drove as slowly as I could to the furthest point in the neighborhood away from that house. I knew I couldn’t navigate to my home on the main streets, so I parked in what I hoped looked like I lived at whatever house I was by, locked myself in my car, crawled into my back seat (which was a typical college student’s mess), and passed out. I woke up around sunrise and carefully navigated my way home.

Stupid, stupid me. But I’m forever thankful that I finally caught on that something was very wrong in that house. I never saw those people again. And I doubled down on my own security going out.

Woman walking a dog on a city sidewalk following a terrible gut feeling.
Walking my dog, familiar route, hear my passed away grandma’s voice in my head LOUDLY tell me to turn down a random street “LOVIE GO LEFT NOW!”.

So I do, completely freaked out. Seconds later a car peels down the road, people get out, guns, hijack a car, steal another. An accident happens and goes up onto the sidewalk. Chaos, screaming. We hid behind a parked van watching it go down. If I hadn’t turned, we would have been right at the spot it happened.

Woman selecting fresh greens at a market, trusting her gut feeling about quality produce
Soringfield, MA, 2018:

I kept running into the same guy in the grocery store. I didnt interact with him but I felt creeped out, cut my list short, and made my way to checkout and parking lot; while wondering why I felt so panicky; as if I was being watched.

Loading my groceries into my trunk, the guy approached me in the parking lot with blue flowers, wanting to ‘apologize for being in my way back there’. It was so odd, I awkardly took them, and said my boyfriend was calling as I secured myself in my car. I hit the gas and called my boyfriend. I was only 2miles from my home but wanted to chat so I didnt feel alone.

It wasn’t the flowers fault so I put them in my bathroom at home, they complimented the blue & green theme and were alive so I couldn’t let myself throw them out. My boyfriend simply thought it was comical.

Fast forward about a month later, news breaks in town about a serial k**ler who was kidnapping, m**dering, and burrying his victims in his (mommas) yard for well over a year. His face pops up on the TV and my jaw dropped; it was all I could mutter to my boyfriend who was over, “Hey, do you remember those blue flowers in my bathroom and the time I called you from my car…” He was the guy who gave them to me.

Later on Detectives share that he would infact approach his victims by casually crossing paths and later offering apologies for being in the way along with small gift or offer to help in order to get them to interact with him.

Yikes!

Sometimes we might have a sixth sense about a situation, and it’s up to us to figure out whether to listen to that feeling or ignore it. According to research by the Good News Network, 70% of folks say that they trust their instincts and 35% also experience a physical gut feeling.

17% of people trust their intuition to tell them if something is wrong with their health, and 20% rely on it when picking a partner. Many people seem to trust their sixth sense to tell them something their consciousness isn't fully aware of.

Sick woman blowing her nose in bed with a terrible gut feeling.
I was dating a guy for about a month and had a terrible flu. Had to cancel our date. He decided to come over and push his way into my apartment telling me he was going to take care of me. This man was 10” taller and 100 lbs bigger than I was. I told him I’d go for some soup and there was a good spot nearby. I drove us, dropped him off, booked it back to my place. I packed a bag and grabbed my cat and stayed at my parents house. My neighbor said he came back for 2 days banging on my front door.

A young man looking at a glowing phone in a dark room with a terrible gut feeling.
My sister called me in the middle of the night because her boyfriend got arrested for drunk driving her car and it was being impounded. I didn’t understand why she wasn’t just getting a ride home from the cop, but something in her voice made me snap awake and leave without even saying anything to my parents.

I picked her up, and the cop seemed mad that I came to get her. Even checked my ID to make sure she was really my sister.

Years later we were talking about it and she told me that when they arrested her ex they threw his wallet and all his belongings in the dumpster and then drove him around for over an hour which was about the amount of time my sister was alone with this other cop.

She said he was acting weird and she had a terrible feeling that he wasn’t going to take her home. Once they put the timeline together she realized once I came to get her they finally took him to the jail. I am so glad I just went and got her, that whole thing was creepy.

Sunlight casting shadows through glass doors in an empty building creating a terrible gut feeling.
I had arrived early to work & I usually spend a few moments chatting with my coworkers before I go in our break room to wait for my shift to start. This particular day, something inside me was just like “nah, don’t talk to nobody. Just go in the break room.” Maybe 3 or 4 minutes after I get in the break room, somebody comes in & takes everyone in the building hostage to rob us. I was the only one not held hostage & called the police.

Police literally said after watching the cameras he arrived at my job at the same time as me and was getting out his car as I walking in the door. The detective said I was lucky that I just went straight into the break room bc had I waited even a few seconds longer, I would’ve probably been the one he aimed the gun at first as I was closest to the door he entered.

It can be hard to know what a gut feeling is because the experience can feel different for everyone. According to Healthline, this experience involves a nagging sense about a situation that might include only thoughts or accompanying physical sensations.

Some people feel unease, goosebumps, or calm when they make the right decision, while others feel a range of emotions from grief to fear. Whatever an individual’s experience, it’s an overwhelming sensation that ‘points’ a person to a specific path.

Action shot of runner's feet blurring past, evoking a sudden urge to run based on gut feeling
I was running in Spain and a guy collapsed on the path a little bit in front of me clutching his chest. I’m Canadian and was visiting, I didn’t have a phone or know what number to call. I noticed a second man kind in some bushes closer to him and he could help the man or call someone one but he just stood there. I ran back towards my hotel. When I loooked back collapsed man was standing back up again totally fine and the guy in the bushes was still there.

Close up of a person resting a hand on their leg, reflecting anxiety and a terrible gut feeling
My mom told me this story. She and her best friend, also a woman, went on vacation to Jamaica around 1975. They were in their early twenties and drinking in a bar and they were having a good time but then they sort of realized the only other women there worked at the bar. A group of men walked in, and the female bartender quietly grabbed my Mom and her friend by the arms and rushed them through the employee part of the building and out the back door, and told them to get away NOW, and not to come back to that bar. They hadn't even paid their tabs. They just did what she said and never found out why. That bartender knew something they didn't and they trusted her gut feeling.

Bright car headlights shining down a dark road at night
Watching a friends dog while they were out of town. Pup wanted to go outside at abiut 11pm, alright we'll go. I generally keep a knife on me, the ONE time I didnt have it because I had just put pajamas on....

We get outside, (my buddy lives smack in the middle of the main street in a pretty busy downtown.) I hear a guy come around the corner doing the whole spiel of "whats your name?" "I dont have one" call the pup closer to me (the dog was very well known, like local celebrity status) the man keeps asking questions, my alarm bells are RINGING. But I dont want to try to go back inside because 1. I dont want him to know what building im going in 2. It's a keypad. It could either glitch at the worst time, or I could get in, but not far enough away from the sensor for it to lock before he's in there with me and my friend's dog. (That was honestly the worst f**king part for me, I have to keep this older sweet babe safe) so I decide to head to the direction of the bar where I work, same street. About three blocks down.

Hes following, still asking me questions, short answers, my eyes are on the dog and my bar. I knew I was absolutely f**ked when a car swung up to the curb facing the wrong direction, dude gets out, makes eye contact and gives the head nod to the guy that was behind. My immediate thought was "f**k. F**k, I am f**ked, we are f**ked" they start doing that thing where they try to box you in by getting me close to the wall. The guy that got out of the car hadn't noticed the dog, I snapped my fingers and said her name, he paused for literally a split second. I took that split second to call the dogs name "LETS GO!" took off running.

They BOTH (so i wasnt wrong) jumped in the same car, whipped it around and sped past me yelling something. Dont know what, dont give a f**k what. I made it to my bar, slammed the door shut behind me and the dog (i absolutely took her in the bar with me) one of the bartenders looks at me "what... the f**k, are you okay?" All i could say was "we are now. Can you get her some water? And can I have a shot please?"

It can be weird to experience a gut feeling for the first time, but they can seem to come out of nowhere, and what’s shocking is that they don’t really originate in the stomach. There is something called a gut-brain connection: even when people feel anxious, stressed, or worried, they might experience nausea or pain in their body.

There’s also a deeper reason these feelings arise: as we go about our day, our brain collects and processes information about the environment. We're conscious of a lot of it, and some is registered in our subconscious, which might color our decisions and feelings without us even realizing it.

Inmate sitting in a prison cell with a terrible gut feeling.
I ran from a serial k**ler. I was 16 & had a VERY bad vibe about this person. His presence alone was giving me a panic attack and I’d never met him before.

My bff told me I was being unreasonable and to have him walk with us home. Her stop was first and as soon as she was gone into her house, I was alone with him, walking in the dark. About 12 steps in, a voice inside me was very audible and LOUD. It said “RUN!” And I did. I never looked back. A week later he was arrested for 2 m**ders of women.

Blurry lights of cars driving down a highway at night inspiring a terrible gut feeling.
It was 10pm, I was driving home on the Interstate. 2 motorcycles pull up behind me and start flashing blue lights. Something told me to pull off the next exit and into a well lit area of the gas station. They pulled in behind me, rolled up to both sides of my front windows looked at me, then drove off. Thats when I noticed they weren’t police officers.

White bed sheets illuminated by dim sunlight in a dark room creating a terrible gut feeling.
I was asleep, and had been feeling terrible.. I was in mid dream when I heard my Grandparents (both who have passed on) scream loudly for me to wake up… GO NOW. When I woke up, I was struggling to breathe, heart rate was 165 and rising… went to the ER and found out not only was I septic but also had a Pulmonary Embolism.

The most interesting thing about gut feelings is that they are sometimes predictions based on a person’s past experience. Studies on this process have found that people’s memories guide their emotions, so without even thinking about it, they might use past experience to guide future decisions.

That’s where gut feelings come in: they’re our body’s way of making quicker decisions without much thought or planning. For example, someone might have a bad feeling about a restaurant their friends plan to go to and later learn that everyone who went there ended up sick. Later on, they might realize that they read a bad review of the place days earlier, which might have guided their ‘gut feeling’ about it.

Hand holding a glowing smartphone screen in the pitch black dark, evoking a terrible gut feeling
In high school a “friend” invited me to a party and kept trying to make me talk to some random dude

I was tasting puke without having puked in my mouth so I said I had to leave the party

Next week I found out she knew the guy had HIV and herpes and wanted him to pass both to me as payback for her boyfriend trying to talk to me the week before.

Close-up of a person holding a steering wheel while driving with a terrible gut feeling
12 years old. I was walking to the A&W in our tiny town. I saw a pickup drive by with two men. I was instantly on edge. I turned and looked back at it to see that they were slowing down. I heard a voice in my head (not mine) yell Run! I did. I hid in a garden shed and watched them drive up and down the street looking for me. I’ve trusted my instincts ever since.

Person walking down a dark alley at night, evoking a terrible gut feeling of danger
I was young and dumb. My classes at uni used to finish when it’s already pretty dark outside in winter. Used public transport. To get to the bus stop i had to go through 2 dark alleys with a uni building in between. Both sides were either an abandoned construction site or just uninhabitable/not used in winter. I’d been using that path for couple of years by that time, always alone. Until then. Mid first alley I see a man (light from the uni building was like a light at the end of a tunnel) first standing aside, then as I’ve approached, stepping on the path right behind me. And first time in my life I got very very scared.

Then two dudes entered the alley going the opposite direction. I briefly thought to asking them for help, but thought that if the man behind had a knife he may take them down pretty fast. But their presence gave me time to reach the uni building in between. It was before mobile phones were a thing. That building was closed, but well lit and there was an old lady inside (all the uni buildings had one with the keys to let people in and out at night).

Again, was considering banging the door asking for help but realistically the man would reach me first if he understood I’ve noticed him or just push us both inside and the lady wouldn’t be of any help. So I stood outside for the lady to see me and if something goes down - have time to call the police. The man meanwhile went to the second alley and turned the building’s corner. There was nothing of use there in this time of the day and year, I knew he was waiting as I had no choice. So I waited till I saw a couple going my direction and a group of people going towards us from the second alley. Asked for them to pretend they know me as I’m being followed.

When we passed the building the man went out from behind the building, looked at me and went back to the first alley.

A week later I saw in the news there was a r**e and m**der there. The culprit was arrested.

It’s important to distinguish between intuition and anxiety or paranoia, as it can be tough to tell the two apart. To tell which is which, look at what direction the feeling is leading you. A sixth sense might come up only in specific situations and may lead a person toward a concrete decision.

On the other hand, anxiety or fear might constantly stay with a person, regardless of who they are with or what they are doing. If this feeling consistently comes up across multiple situations, folks might realize paranoia is guiding them rather than intuition.

Silhouettes of people at a dimly lit red club event
Went to a club. Walked in with some friends and headed off to find the restrooms. As I was walking across the dance floor I noticed people were standing up against the walls and only a few girls were dancing. Remember thinking 'this reminds me of a middle school dance from when I was a kid.' By the time I walked back out some of the people had moved around and I remember thinking 'they're dancing weird...' made it to the middle of the dance floor when I realized they weren't dancing but I was standing in the middle of a large brawl. The lighting wasn't the best as it was dark with the flashing lights which would move around so it was a bit disjointed but I walked over to my friends and said 'let's gtfo here, now...' several people were st**bed and a guy got sh*t probably 10 minutes after we left.

Hands holding a glowing smartphone in the dark
Tried to enroll at a senior high school for an animation course, it was way too far away from my home but there is no tuition fee so that's a bit of a huge plus. I missed a lot of red flags back then, but for some reason there was one time I just thought that maybe it wasn't worth it because it was too far away.

I found a nearby school that is offering a free tuition fee too but they only have STEM and IT courses (I took STEM). The previous school keeps messaging me and asking me if I would continue my enrollment to them, they even "threatened" me that I wouldn't be able to enroll to other schools because I'm already registered into them. Didn't buy that s**t at all, and I proceed to block their contact number after that.

Fast forward a year later, all my classmates who enrolled at that school regretted enrolling there because not only is it faraway but the "free tuition" they offered was a scam and didn't last a year. The current school where I was at that time wasn't any better but at least I still have free tuition and its nearby where I live.

A silver car driving on a lonely highway with mountains
I was 9 years old. I grew up in rural Vermont. One summer day, I walked to a nearby field to pick wild strawberries. I had just crawled under a barbed wire fence when a guy driving a jeep went by. He honked and waved at me. I didn't recognize him but I just assumed he knew my parents and waved back.

I'd been in the field for about ten minutes when I suddenly knew it was time to go home. I didn't feel any fear and I didn't connect it to that guy, I just knew I had to immediately stop what I was doing and go home.

I had crawled under the fence and crossed the road when I heard a horn honk. I looked back and the guy in the jeep was back, parked right next to where I had just emerged from the fence. I didn't immediately realize what was happening and actually took a couple of steps towards the jeep, thinking maybe the guy needed directions, before it occurred to me what was going on and I turned and ran all the way back home.

Like the folks on this list, it might help all of us connect with our gut feelings because they're grounded in observation and experience. This doesn’t mean we should always act on that impulse; we can sometimes follow through with a decision after more planning and thought.

Unfortunately, many people also forget that wishful thinking isn’t part of their sixth sense, and they get carried away by something that could affect them. This can happen when someone wants something so badly that they start believing it will happen, but it can lead them astray.

A dim hotel hallway evoking a eerie gut feeling
My mother-in-law was living in a seedy hotel and we went to visit her once.

All I could think was "oh yeah, we could absolutely get m**dered in this place." It just had those vibes.

Within a week there was someone was m**dered in the lobby. So I guess I was right.

My dad had this buddy of his take us out on his fishing boat when I was young. Though I’d grown up on the water I was incredibly freaked out the entire time - they kept poking fun at me for how scared I was. He was driving crazy and the water was very rough.

The next day I refused to go again, had a full on tantrum at age 8 that I wasn’t getting on that boat and swore I’d jump out if they tried to force me on. My dad stayed back with me, very frustrated.

We sat on the shore and had front row seats when the boat flipped over.
