If you’ve ever considered getting a tattoo, gotten one, or asked someone for advice about one, you’ve probably heard the phrase, “Sleep on it.” And honestly, it makes sense. Getting a tattoo can be expensive, time-consuming, and, in most cases, a long-term commitment. Many people spend days, weeks, or even months thinking about the design, placement, size, and meaning before finally sitting down in the tattoo chair. After all, while you can change your hairstyle or swap out your wardrobe, changing something permanently inked into your skin isn't quite as simple.

And tattoos are clearly more popular than ever. The global tattoo industry is estimated to be worth around $2.66 billion, with market research projecting that it could grow to more than $5.99 billion over the coming years as body art becomes increasingly mainstream. Europe reportedly holds one of the largest shares of the global tattoo market, accounting for roughly a third of worldwide revenue, while North America follows closely behind. Nearly one-third of adults in the United States are estimated to have at least one tattoo, showing just how common body art has become. The Asia-Pacific region also represents a significant part of the industry, proving that tattoos are no longer a niche form of self-expression but a truly global cultural phenomenon.
Now, one of the biggest reasons people take their time before getting inked is simply figuring out what on earth they want to get. For some, the answer is deeply personal: a tribute to someone they love, an important date, a major milestone, or a way to remember someone who has passed away. Others might simply fall in love with a particular style, artist, symbol, or design—and hey, sometimes you just think something looks cool, and that's reason enough!
But with thousands of designs out there and endless ways to make a tattoo your own, choosing the one can be surprisingly overwhelming. That's where books such as Tattoo Johnny: 3,000 Tattoo Designs can come in handy, offering pages upon pages of artwork and ideas across a huge range of styles. Whether you're thinking about your very first tattoo or planning your next one, a little inspiration can certainly help.
Of course, even after spending all that time choosing the perfect design, there’s another reason it’s worth thinking things through: tattoos are meant to last. While it is possible to remove or fade many tattoos with modern laser treatments, the process can take multiple sessions, cost thousands of dollars, and isn't always as simple as pressing an “undo” button. The size, color, placement, and age of a tattoo can all affect how difficult it is to remove, and some colors are more stubborn than others. So, while changing your mind doesn't necessarily mean you're stuck with a tattoo forever, it can take plenty of time, money, and patience to make it disappear.
And sometimes, instead of removing a tattoo altogether, people decide to cover it with something new. To find out why, Bored Panda spoke with Harkesh Rajpoot, a seasoned tattoo artist from Rajasthan, India with more than a decade of experience. According to him, relationship breakups are one of the most common reasons people come looking for a cover-up. “People are excited at the beginning of a relationship,” he explains. “Some get matching tattoos or have each other's names and initials tattooed as a symbol of their love. But after a breakup, they don't always want that reminder anymore.” Those once-romantic designs can suddenly become painful reminders of the past, making names, initials, and matching tattoos some of the most common things people want transformed into something completely new.
Harkesh has also noticed that people's changing beliefs and values can lead them to seek a cover-up. “Sometimes people want to cover symbols or messages that no longer reflect their current values,” he says. “People change over time, and a tattoo that once felt meaningful may later become something they regret or no longer identify with.” In these situations, covering an old design can represent more than a visual change; it can also be a way of moving on from a past version of yourself.
Some reasons are much more personal. Harkesh says that people sometimes choose tattoos to cover scars and transform an area that may hold difficult memories. “I've seen people use meaningful or decorative tattoos to cover medical scars, self-harm scars, or scars left after major surgeries,” he explains. “For some clients, it's about feeling more confident and reclaiming that part of their body.” While every person's experience is different, these tattoos can sometimes become an important part of someone's personal healing journey.
