Soviet Urban Planning Living A New Life: An Urban Barley Field Installation

Summer 2016: a soviet-time Tallinn`s largest residential district Lasnamäe. A vast traffic channel to the citycenter with once-planned and never-built tramway in the middle.
The road and the bridges are completed, as well as the nowhere leading concrete stairways waiting desperately for the tram…
This summer the urban plan got an unplanned mid-term solution: 2 young designers planted a barley field on the unused stairs. Barley was the earliest crop grown in Estonia just precisely in the same area.
Autumn 2016: crop is ripe. Harvesting party on the stairs will be held in the end of September.
Throughout the summer it has offered the district a new blow of life – green young verdant seedlings growing and turning into a ripe yellow barley field reminding us of the cycles of nature and life.
