Asking a family member for a favor is always a gamble. Most of the time they show up, and you owe them a casserole for life. The "responsible adult" box on medical forms is meant to guarantee that someone competent will look after you, which sounds easy until you start counting how many adults in your life you wouldn't trust with a houseplant.
When this 19-year-old picked her sister-in-law for the job, she figured the wisdom teeth would be the hard part. Her ride home took a detour nobody had agreed to, and the family group chat hasn't been the same since.
Entrusting your post-op wellness to someone else's hands is an uncomfortable decision
A teen was undergoing wisdom teeth removal and was certain her sister-in-law could handle being her coiffeur for the day
But while being heavily medicated, she found herself loopy and abandoned by a pool while her sister-in-law hung out with friends
When her brother heard about this, he flipped out, and met them at home to take care of his sister
The wife was furious with the teen, saying that she tattled on her for no reason
In the comments, people came to her defense, saying that what the sister-in-law did was inexcusable
Once she had gathered more information from her brother, she returned with an update
The brother admitted that he was filing for divorce and custody because the wife had left their 2-year-old alone at home
She was out shopping and did not see anything wrong with leaving the toddler alone
The husband had kicked his wife out, paid for her to stay in a hotel, and gave her 2 weeks to find suitable accommodation
The wife maintained that she had done nothing wrong, but the brother would file for full custody as he feared for his child's safety
Wisdom teeth removal is one of the most common surgeries around. Oral surgeons estimate that roughly 5 million Americans have their wisdom teeth pulled every year, which amounts to about 10 million teeth. So our 19-year-old was one of a very big crowd, and that crowd gets one rule on the paperwork: bring a grown-up.
IV sedatives are known for causing memory gaps and fuzzy judgment, which is why offices tell patients to skip driving, big decisions, and signing anything for the next 24 hours. The escort's job is to get the patient home and keep an eye on them. A surprise pool day was not on the form.
The pool deck is also a rough place to recover. Aftercare sheets from oral surgeons usually advise resting and avoiding strenuous activity for a few days, and most also tell patients to stay out of the water for a while due to the bleeding risk.
Nausea and dizziness are common as anesthesia wears off, and a table in 90-degree heat is not going to help with either. Our teen did the sensible thing and called for backup, which is more than her ride did.
Then there's the toddler, which is the biggest area of concern here. According to the CDC, drowning is the leading cause of loss of life for kids ages 1 to 4, and ingesting harmful substances and burns are not far behind. Most US states don't set a legal minimum age for leaving a child home alone, but the guidance that exists tends to land around 10 to 12 years old.
A 2-year-old is nowhere near that range. A twenty-minute shopping trip sounds short until you remember that a toddler needs a lot less than twenty minutes to find the one thing in the house that was never meant to be found. Add an unlocked front door and a phone silenced on a charger, and "nothing bad happened" starts to sound like luck.
As for whether she broke up a marriage, the Gottman Institute often points out that couples wait an average of six years before getting help for their problems. People rarely end a marriage over one afternoon. They end it when one afternoon lands on top of a pile, and her brother had already been carrying a pile.
Courts also tend to weigh the best interests of the child above everything else in custody cases, and a documented history of leaving a toddler unattended is exactly the sort of thing that comes up. Her sister-in-law's version of events, where her niece was "fine" and the real problem was a loopy teenager with a phone, says a lot about why she was being asked to leave. The one thing the OP did was ask for help. The rest was all Bri.
Do you think Bri deserved what was coming to her? Share your thoughts in the comments!
People applauded this teen and her brother for taking the right steps to ensure the toddler's safety
