We wanted to learn more about this comic series as it makes its debut on Bored Panda, so we reached out to the cartoonist behind it. First, we were curious about what inspired Amil to start creating comics—here’s what we found out: “During the pandemic, some people got into baking bread, others started knitting—I started a webcomic. I had written a bunch of random jokes back in college, and one day, I found them and thought some were still funny, so I turned them into a comic.”
When asked about the recurring themes in his work, the cartoonist responded: “My comics are usually based on whatever random thoughts I’m having at the moment, but I tend to focus on things I know or like—lots of Star Wars and pop culture references, comic books, sci-fi and fantasy movies, and whatever weird pet peeves I have with people at the time.”
Amil also shared that sometimes the ideas he personally loves for new strips are too niche to publish. He explained: “I’ve written a lot of comics that are hilarious to me but probably wouldn’t make sense to most people. I once came up with one that I found really funny because it was such an awful thing to imagine, but I decided it probably wasn’t a good fit for my audience: ‘When Grandpa lost his memory, I stole his wallet. Don’t worry, I told him his nurse did it.’”
Next, we were curious about which cartoon turned out to be Amil's favorite from ‘Gobsmacked.’ He revealed: “My favorite cartoon is probably Satan ordering Starbucks and the barista spelling his name as Stephanie. It’s a simple joke, but it’s a universal concept, and I liked how the artwork came out.”
Lastly, we wanted to know which contemporary artists Amil particularly admires. The cartoonist told us: “I really admire the work of Skeleton Claw. His artwork is unique, and he always has a fresh take on things.”
