We reached out to the cartoonist to learn more about his work. Dave shared how he first found inspiration to start creating comics: “I couldn't tell the difference between my imagination and the real world. Everything seems funny to me. So, I had to find some way to deal with it. Not really. Actually, I read a comic once, but I misread the caption, and I made it funnier. So, I thought, 'Hey, I can write funny stuff.' Then I found out cartoonists get paid. So, I thought, 'Hey, I'll do that.'”
The artist revealed the secret behind his comic creation process: “I use a magic formula. It consists of 3 secret ingredients. I mix them together in a glass of grapefruit juice. Then, zim-zam-kabam, the funny ideas come! Had you going, didn't I?” Then he added: “Actually, I look at everything from a different perspective. Like when I think of a sock drawer, something else comes to mind. I can't help it. It's second nature to me.”
We were curious about which artists' styles in the world of comics inspire Dave. He shared: “There are thousands of cartoonists and they all have their own style. But I don't admire anyone's style. I admire their thinking. Their ideas.Their humor. Their twist on life. Their unique view of the world. I admire genius thinking. I admire a lot of cartoonists. Too many to list.”
Lastly, the cartoonist shared what he finds most rewarding about creating comics: “For me, there are 3 rewards as a cartoonist. One, the joy of making someone happy. Two, I'm always amazed when I create something new. And three, receiving money for it. And what keeps me motivated? The same three things.”
