Esther Traugot’s piece “Huddle 2 (Workers)” is currently showing in Oakland, CA as part of a three-artist exhibition called “Excerpts From the Natural World”.
Her astoundingly delicate work features dozens of bee carcasses wrapped in tiny crochet rings - representing a futile attempt at some kind of preservation.
From her artist's statement: "As bandage or cozy, these support structures investigate the relationship between nurturing and controlling nature. My interest in the objects extends from the notion of landscape and how we not only experience, but also negotiate with the natural world."
For me her work also underscores big issues facing the globe such as colony collapse disorder, the future of bees themselves and how it all relates to food security.
Practically, I also wonder how she even managed to do that?
