Last week, I had an opportunity to visit Seodaemun Prison located in Seoul, South Korea. The prison was constructed in 1907 and stayed still until now as a proof for the horrible act of Japanese in the history of Korea. The prison was called Gyeongseong Gamok, opened in 1908 and then was changed to Seodaemun prison in 1923. This is the prison where the largest amount of man power was deployed with the highest number of prisoners among the 30 prisons in the country. It is the symbol of the typical prison under the Japanese occupation. The Prison now is a museum and memorial to honor those who suffered and gave up their lives for Korea during the Japanese occupation. The institution was used by the Japanese to house independence and pro-democracy activists. It also represents the suffering of the Korean people as they struggled to archive independence and democracy.
