Curiosity tends to awaken an itch within you, and most of us have learned the hard way that scratching it does not always end well. The wrong drawer, the accidentally opened email, the conversation you were never meant to overhear from the other side of a door that was not quite closed. Some information arrives uninvited and then absolutely refuses to leave.
@chronicallyhumored asked the internet a simple question: what is a secret you accidentally discovered that you were not supposed to know? The thread that followed was nothing short of jaw-dropping, to say the least. These are the ones that stuck.

That my Chinese grandfather had a first wife and 2 sons back in China and he wasn’t married to my Nicaraguan grandmother while he had 10 kids with her in Nicaragua. And when those sons passed away in the 1950s, he sent his two oldest sons to China to REPLACE the two lost sons.

I was stalking my ex boyfriend online by googling his name and discovered his mom lost her nurses license because she was in charge of counting towels or whatever during a surgery and miscounted and one was left in the patient. Found the official docs.

I found out my late husband was raising a kiddo like she was his…because the mom (his ex, who had the kid after they dated) messaged me asking if he could come re-sign some papers he’d snuck out to complete.
He’d been meeting secretly with them, my guess is because he knew he wasn’t going to be able to have children with me while being treated for cancer. Kiddo wasn’t his, DNA proved it, but he sort of convinced himself she was. So did his family.

I worked at two right-wing news/talk radio stations (same corporate owner, same office) from 2008 to 2010. I discovered a commentator/fill-in host was gay five years before he was more or less forced to come out. He was entitled and arrogant and the Christian conservatives in the office struggled to tolerate him, lol.

I knew the marketing company I worked for was getting dropped before the owner did. Overheard the client talking to his daughter (adult, she was his COO) about researching different firms to replace the current one.

My dad had a young woman pregnant at the same time. My mom was pregnant with my sister. She eventually had twin boys and had a lot of trouble delivering them. My grandparents had to go and pay the hospital bill.

That the IRA and the Namibian equivalent met together in Scotland in the 80s under the guise of a journalism event. (I had a crush on the Irish guy and pretended I'd passed out drunk while I was waiting for the Namibian guy to leave and instead got to overhear this conversation. I thought for years it was a dream because they used a name I knew, only to discover years later there was someone else with that name who was a journalist in that town.)

My manager at the time was sleeping with a married man. She was talking about him and coworkers asked if she’d bring him by and she had all these excuses. Without thought I said yes because he’s married and didn’t think about it. I turned out to be right LOL.

In my 20s, I discovered one of my aunts was once married to a Latino. She is far right politically & it makes me laugh to this day. "Who is that kissing aunt... in these pics?" Granny was like.

It's my wife's family, we found out that grandma had given up a child for adoption 40 years ago and hidden it from everyone. After finding that out, we also found out that my wife's uncle has a different dad than his siblings and nobody knew. His biological dad was grandma's best friend's husband.

Overheard my mom say “i love my son, I really do, but after what he did to (me) no more.” Not a clue what she meant, I knew my brother was having issues when I was a kid (we’re 11yrs apart) so by time I was old enough to form solid memories he was already in a group home. I will ask her about it one day, but not for a while.

My bio dad (who was still heavily in my life at that time) had three children from a previous marriage. Found out at 17 reading my grandmother’s will. I guess I was apparently supposed to have known, but I most certainly did not, and it is verboten to bring up with him.

My mom passed away when I was 14 and my dad passed when I was 34. My two older sisters and I knew that our mom had miscarried her first child, a boy they were planning to name Robert, in 1969. After dad’s funeral we were talking to a cousin and found out that Robert was conceived before their wedding, and was why they got married. Not a big deal today, but it’s a secret both parents felt the need to go to their graves with.

HAHAHAHA. So my great grandfather was a photographer. He passed in 1992, but my great grandmother didn’t pass until much later in the 90s putting me in jr year. Mom Grammy and I were doing the house, we got to his dark room… and in his desk I found a false bottom drawer. The three of us were in TEARS XXX I learned something about them that day, and evidently ladies Grammy knew!
