Since 2009, ROTARACT ALEXANDRIA COSMOPOLITAN has been celebrating World Down Syndrome Day in Alexandria, Egypt. It all started when we were working on a community project in a very needy area, and we found one woman strapping her kid to a pole. When she was asked for the reason, she thought that he was useless. From that point, our club took a promise for spreading as much awareness about Down Syndrome in Egypt and worldwide.
Down Syndrome International has officially earmarked the 21st March each year as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). This date was chosen as the number 21 is synonymous with Down syndrome, signifying the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, and since the event started in 2006, it has grown into a truly global celebration.
