Jeff goes by the name Sarge. He lives in front of a Winn-Dixie in Ft. Lauderdale. He’s quick with a blue joke and repeats that he’s an “Outdoorsman” and a “Happy Camper” rather than homeless. Sarge is an alcoholic and says he suffers from PTSD. He says he feels “dead” and that no one cares about him. He does receive some outreach, but the booze has a stronger hold on him than a warm bed. He’s 57 years-old and has no family ties. He salutes a lot, and proclaims, “I’m an American!” but his fragile life is an American nightmare.
