Sarcasm can be harder to interpret in writing. Since you can’t hear the person’s tone or see their face, the comment can be perceived differently. Research on the use of sarcasm online suggests that even a little wink or smirk emoji can help people recognize a comment as a joke and respond better to it.
When sarcasm is used to convey criticism, people may see it as less serious or negative and become less defensive. Of course, that does not mean sarcasm is automatically a nicer way to communicate.
But between people who understand each other, it can take some of the sting out of what is being said.
I have definitely had those moments when someone says something so perfectly sarcastic that I’m still thinking about it hours later, wishing I had come up with it myself.
