Relationships And Writing

The next day when I gave it to her I could see a sparkle in her eye; my writing to her had brightened up her day just a little bit, which was good enough for me. When she read the card I had written for her, I knew that our friendship had just been mended. To some it may seem silly that a little card can fix a broken relationship; but I seemed to have a way with writing, and I was going to use that to as much of my advantage as possible.
Writing had been, and still is an important aspect of my life. Writing has been a way for me to channel my emotions and get across my point in a way that I wouldn’t be able to in words. It was never to avoid face to face conversations, rather, it was a way to cure my anxiety in face to face social situations. Similar to China in 10 Words, the author Yu Hua talks about his perspective on China through writing. He seems to be able to give a portrayal of the real China in writing that makes you able feel the emotions he can feel. Yu Hua really does seem to feel his emotions when he writes, and even though I may not have been there with him as he wrote; I
can imagine him lost in thought while sitting on the train as it was speeding through the desolate land of China. Yu Hua is so compelling with his stories, and that is what I wanted my writing to be like. My writing needed to be as emotional as Yu Hua’s had been so that whoever I was writing to could feel the pain, regret, guilt, or sorrow that I was feeling at that moment.
Without learning how to be literate, my life would not be the same. With all of the obstacles I have had to deal with; literacy has helped me to be able to cope with them in my own special way. I used writing as a tool when I was younger, and it has got me to a place where I can handle those same types of situations in a face to face manner, rather than always writing. Because of writing, I have also been able to grow so much in my speaking ability, and the ability to be able to speak and read in front of others without feeling so much anxiety. It was always easier for me to express myself through writing, and sometimes today I still use that method. Now, though, I would consider myself very outspoken, and I attribute my success in those areas to the ability I had growing up when it comes to writing and using my own strengths to solve problems.
“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours” (Thoreau 93). Henry David Thoreau, the author of Walden, abandoned his whole life to go live on a desolate lake all by himself. There, he contemplated his life, and how life in the woods worked for him. Through his endeavors in the woods he was able to realize what he wanted in life, and how he could be successful. This quote by Thoreau holds true to my ability to use writing to express my feelings. When Thoreau says “he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours” it relates to the fact that as the years went on I gradually was able to speak my mind face to face without being so afraid, in other words, I met with success.
To this day, I still find myself sitting at my desk writing. Even though it may be a new desk, in a new place away from home; I still can get lost in a
world of thoughts when I write. There are also days where all I do is talk and I love to be very up front about what I am feeling. Writing has changed me for the better, and I have been able to evolve into the person I am today because of it. Before I was able to speak comfortably face to face; I always wanted people to see what I had to say to them first, and that is why I wrote.
