Man Finds A “Better Woman” Who Will Be His Stay-At-Home Wife And Leaves, Tries To Return But Wife Blocks Him

Ilona Baliūnaitė and Oleksandra Kyryliuk

These days, wanting to become a mother does not mean putting the rest of your life on hold. Plenty of women have children while also building a career and going after the goals they have for themselves.

But when this Redditor started talking about having a baby with her husband, he suddenly demanded that she quit her job and become a stay-at-home mom, even though that had never been part of the plan. She was completely blindsided by the pressure and refused.

That was only the start of a much bigger mess, one that brought some painful secrets to light. Read the full story below.

These days, most moms choose to keep working after having children

Honestly, the fact that this man did not just want but actively demanded that his wife become a stay-at-home mom raises a lot of red flags.

After all, this is not the 1950s. Women still have a long way to go when it comes to equality, but they can have an education, build a career, and have financial independence. Having children does not have to become their entire identity. If a woman wants to have a job and keep some independence, that should be her choice.

In fact, stay-at-home moms are now in the minority, at least in the US. According to the 2023 State of Motherhood survey, 25% of moms are stay-at-home parents.

So the husband’s vision of a perfect little family is clearly not how most families live today.

What is also important is that not every stay-at-home mom made that choice freely. As survey reports show, some women have had to stay home because childcare is too expensive or because their work schedules are too rigid. For them, having one parent at home simply becomes the more practical option.

Women should be able to choose what works best for them and their families

That is really what this conversation should come down to. The issue is not whether a mom should work or stay home. The issue is whether she is being allowed to live the life she wants and whether she has the means to do it.

Because mothers get judged either way. Working moms are often criticized for being too distant, for not spending enough time with their children, or for caring too much about their jobs. Fathers, of course, rarely get hit with that same judgment.

Stay-at-home moms get judged too. They are often labeled lazy or unambitious. The parent bringing in the paycheck is still often treated like the one making the bigger contribution, simply because their labor happens in a formal workplace.

And as the research above shows, plenty of moms would love to return to work, but their families cannot afford childcare that can cost thousands of dollars. For others, the opposite is true. They would prefer to stay home with their children, but financially, it makes more sense for both parents to keep working.

Sasha Brown-Worsham, someone who has been both a working mom and a stay-at-home mom, argued in Parents that it is time to stop pitting the two against each other.

“The truth is, there’s no one way to be the greatest parent ever. I have been and have known many SAHMs who don’t feel creatively fulfilled—and their home life suffers. I have also known many working moms who struggle with balance and wish they could find it,” she says.

“But I have also known the opposite,” she adds. “A working friend of mine once told me her two children ‘rise up and call me badass.’ Couldn't that be true? And in the end, aren't we all kind of badasses, on the same team, just trying to do right by our children and teach them how to be kind and happy adults?”

It is hard to argue with that. In this story, the husband’s demand was already troubling on its own, but it turned out to be far from the biggest issue in the marriage, considering he had been cheating on his wife the whole time.

More than anything, the story shows how much better families would be served by honesty and respect instead of judgment.
