An Instagram prankster pretended to steal money from a hardworking father of four, who finally broke down on camera
The viral incident happened in August this year at a grocery store in White Lake, Michigan, where Walt worked as a direct-store-delivery employee for frozen pizza brand Red Baron.
His job involves visiting supermarkets and restocking their freezer aisles.
On the day he was filmed, he was already behind schedule, having stayed an hour longer than planned.
That's when a content creator associated with the Instagram account @thea.ctiveworld, also known as Three Of A Kind, approached him under the pretense of asking the time.
When Walt pulled out his phone to check, the prankster brought his own device close to it and played a prerecorded Apple Pay transaction sound.
He then pretended to take money from Walt, saying, “Thank you, bro, I just took $10.”
Walt realized he was being recorded and tried to leave, but the creators kept following him.
The confrontation eventually reached a checkout counter, where Walt's frustration spilled over.
He told the pranksters, “My life is hard enough as it is, okay? I don’t need this cr*p! You’re probably making money off of this. I can’t even pay my go**amn mortgage! And I got four kids at home. So not funny!”
Walt also explained that his children had already gone to bed by the time he got home and that he would have to wake up at 5 a.m. to service 10 more grocery stores the following day.
After viewers slammed the pranksters for targeting working people, their account was reportedly deactivated
He was also worried that the disruption could get him into trouble with store management or even jeopardize his job.
Despite Walt's visible frustration, they uploaded the footage anyway, and it soon spread across social media.
Viewers were quick to condemn the creators for turning an employee's difficult day into entertainment.
One person wrote, “I saw this video last night, and it broke my heart. Things are so tough right now - so many of us are struggling, and so close to snapping/breaking down...”
“I’m sorry recording others in public for ‘jokes and pranks’ is never funny. Leave people alone. You never know how someone will react, they may have nothing to lose,” another commenter added.
“Especially when the ‘joke’ is making people think you stole money from them. Times are so hard right now and everyone seems to be hanging on by a thread financially and emotionally, like read the f**king room man,” a third user said.
Others expressed, “Like honestly that behavior is super antisocial and irritating. Leave employees alone! They don’t exist for your stupid content.”
Some commenters also questioned the financial incentives behind viral content, with one writing, “End monetization of streaming and podcasting - end it all”.
“I felt so bad for this guy he really struck a chord with regular working-class people who struggle every day and don’t have time for social media influencer bull**it,” another commenter wrote.
A stranger stepped up to help Walt through a public fundraiser, while another campaign was launched to help the man behind it
As concern grew that Walt might face repercussions at work, a stranger named Luke Oakenshield decided to help.
On Tuesday, October 27, Oakenshield launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Support a Harassed Red Baron Worker.”
He did not personally know Walt, but he was concerned that the viral confrontation could lead to workplace trouble for the father of four.
The fundraiser quickly gained momentum, raising $446,910 toward its $700,000 goal.
A reported $30,000 contribution from technology company Higgsfield AI also helped boost the fundraising effort.
Luke later connected with Walt and his partner via a WhatsApp video call to verify Walt's identity and arrange for him to receive the funds.
GoFundMe also stepped in to secure the campaign and link Walt as its beneficiary.
According to Luke, “Walt Z out of Michigan sends a heartfelt thank you, and is absolutely blown away by how much people have cared over this.”
He and his family also requested privacy as they processed the sudden attention and prepared to receive the funds.
But the story did not end there.
As people learned more about Oakenshield, they discovered that the man who had helped raise such a substantial amount for another family was facing serious difficulties of his own.
Red Baron’s parent company publicly backed Walt, calling him a “valued member of our team”
Reportedly, Luke is a veteran experiencing homelessness and living in his car while dealing with PTSD and unemployment.
A separate GoFundMe campaign, titled “Support Luke Who Defended the Red Baron Worker,” was subsequently launched by his friend Dom Certalic.
The campaign set a $6,500 goal intended to help him secure housing, obtain reliable transportation, and address outstanding debts.
As of this writing, the fundraiser has raised $4,718 from 141 donations.
Schwan's Company, Red Baron's parent company, also confirmed it reached out to Walt after learning about the incident.
“Following the incident, we connected directly with our team member to check on his well-being, and we continue to offer our support. We are pleased to share that he is doing well and remains a valued member of our team,” a company spokesperson said.
Red Baron also joined the public show of support.
The brand's official account on X posted, “He's still here. He's got a fan club. Including us.”
Meanwhile, the creators behind @thea.ctiveworld faced intense backlash as the video continued circulating.
Their Instagram account was subsequently deactivated, and reports also indicate that they removed their social media presence after the controversy.
“Publicly harassing people trying to feed their families just for content is lowest tier of internet culture,” wrote one netizen
