A good movie poster is artwork in itself. It will present you with the themes in the movie without straight up telling you what the movie is about. Besides making movie posters readable and functional, to make an iconic one, you need to understand visual hierarchy, know typography, and understand coloring, among other design skills.
Some artists like Doaly have already mastered creating memorable and iconic movie posters. As a designer and illustrator from the UK, he has already captured the attention of social media by reimagining popular movie posters in his own style.
Doaly is passionate about storytelling and is officially working for major clients such as BBC, Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Marvel Comics, Lucasfilm, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures, Wired and Sony Playstation, and Image Comics.

Bored Panda got in touch with the artist of these posters to learn about him and his art. When asked to tell more about his background, Doaly shared: “I was always a creative child growing up, I loved to draw, and I would start drawing at any chance I got on any scrap of paper I could find. I knew from an early age I wanted to do something creative when I grew up, I just didn’t know what that would be. With no mentors or family in the creative fields, it felt a little like a dream, but hey, dreaming can pay off.”

“My love of films started at an early age. One of my earliest memories is playing in between the velvet seats of a cinema. My Dad is a bigger fan of film, so usually, we’d get together as a family and watch a movie every night. It was a way of coming together and connecting as a family, as you would around a fireplace.

He continued: “When I look back now it makes perfect sense why I do what I do today. Those early influences really stuck with me, and so when I had the chance to combine my two passions of film and art, I jumped at it. I started off by doing it for fun and then slowly started to get my work noticed and shared more and more online until I was contacted to create my first official poster. I’ve never looked back since and seized every opportunity that came my way.”

All artwork starts somewhere, and most of the time, it begins with an idea. Therefore we asked Doaly how he comes up with ideas for these movie posters. He shared: “I try and break down a film and see what’s behind all the fireworks and set pieces, I want to try and understand what the emotional stakes are, the relationship between characters, and find that emotional resonance that stays with you after you've watched a film. That way pretty much everyone becomes a building block of how I come up with an idea. Without recreating exactly what’s happened on the screen, I want it to be familiar but something new at the same time.”

Doaly, loving movies since childhood, must mean that he has a collection of his favorite movies to watch. But what we also wanted to know, is his favorite movie, which he made a poster of. “There’s been a lot over the years and certain pieces are special for different reasons, depending on what was going on in my life, and what I wanted to achieve with the poster. A special one would definitely be Batman Begins, I love the film, and it's still my favorite of the trilogy. It's still a special poster because I wanted to create a Batman poster without actually drawing Batman and for it to still have an impact and stand out. These challenges are what continue to make the job fun and interesting day after day.”- shared the artist.

Sometimes artists get influenced by their artwork as, but art can also take over some of the personality traits of an artist.

“I think it's more of how my personality influences the posters, I love looking at the details of things, how stories are put together, the era the film takes place in, the art style of the time. I like playing in that world where everything means something so there are no wasted words or brush strokes, everything is there for a reason. I like things to mean something so I think that’s why I design posters the way I do. I like to find meaning in things.” - Doaly shared.

Artist also shared what he wants his audience to take away from his posters.

“That they feel something after looking at one of my pieces, the art is there to connect you back to the film or get you interested in watching a film that you haven’t yet. I want it to capture your eyes but also get you thinking and hopefully something that you’d want to come back to and look at again.”

If you are a beginner or have always been interested in poster making, Doaly shared some advice for you: The most important thing is to make posters and learn from everything you create. Some will work, and some won’t, but what is important is finishing and learning. You need to find your voice in how you tell a story, so it stands out from the crowd. With practice, you will find your style and your way of looking at the world, so just make posters and enjoy the journey, share your work, and the right people will start taking notice.”

And lastly, Doaly added: “I was always a daydreamer as a kid and wanted to draw and create as a job. I’m very grateful for what I get to call a day job today. Sometimes daydreaming pays off when you also put in the work. So dare to dream because you can make it happen.
