Bored Panda reached out to Morgan to learn more about him and his creative process. We asked the artist how his background in building design influences his approach to creating comics. He replied that it is the core of all his comics. "'The foundation of a good joke is the foundation of a solid skyscraper,' I always say. Sure, I was mocked by my peers for my architectural designs, which some called 'impossible,' 'dangerous,' or even 'Dr. Seussian in nature.' But when I switched from building design to comics, everything just clicked."
Morgan's comics often feature him as the main character, so we asked him what inspired this choice and how it reflects his personal experiences. "I can honestly say without bias that I myself am the single greatest character ever used in a comic. Some of the comics that feature me are word-for-word direct experiences. Others are things my therapists said they’re worried about me doing. The comics write themselves, honestly."
According to Morgan, "Cymorg Comics" reminds people to pay attention to their daily lives. We asked the artist to expand on the message or philosophy behind his work. "I think if you pay attention, you’ll find all sorts of meaningful experiences everywhere in your daily life. Like the pedestrian crossing the street. Really should've paid attention to him. Haha!"
We asked Morgan how he balances the fictional aspects of comics and their reflection of real-life situations. According to the artist, media literacy is more important than ever today. "As a comic artist, weaponizing fiction to spread as much misinformation within comics about everyday relatable situations is the greatest tool I have against the dark forces of evil."
Speaking about memorable moments or experiences from Morgan's time studying at the Hong Kong Institute of Design, the artist shared one: "I was eating lunch one day in Hong Kong somewhere in my third year studying design there. Having only been there for such a short period of time, I had yet to learn a single word of the local language (whatever it was), and I could only communicate through my comics. The waitress serving me was so put off by one of the comics I had made trying to order food, she had me arrested. Thus assuredly ending my career in design and any hope of finishing the semester."
