This one month long photography project was inspired by the series of Raja Ravi Varma paintings. Raja Ravi Varma was a renowned Indian Malayali painter famous for his latest European academic art techniques of the day.
My project was taking some of his renowned paintings and trying to convert them into photographs, using digital photography and post processing.

Shakuntala - Looks Of Love"

Backstory:
Shakuntala; an important character of the Mahabharata is looking for her lover Dushyanta, while pretending to remove a thorn from her foot and is accompanied by her friends- Anasooya and Priyamvada

"Hamsa Damayanthi"

Backstory:
The story behind this painting goes on to say the love story between a King, Nal and his lady love, Damayanthi. Nal in his desire, to woo Damayanthi, sends out a Hamsa (a swan) as a messenger. Hamsa agrees to convince the princess, in lieu of the king saving its life previously.
Raja Ravi Varma has tried to capture the moment in the painting when the Hamsa is regaling the glorious deeds of Nal, while Damayanthi stands, listening to it intently, her face filled with love for Nal.

Radha waiting for Krishna in Kunjavan

Backstory:
Ravi Varma has painted other canvases of Radha in varying moods and emotions. In this painting, Radha is serenely waiting for her Krishan, her god and lover. The platter of homage is by her side, waiting to be picked up.

Radha in the moonlight

Backstory:
In this famous painting of Raja Ravi Varma, he has tried to capture the dazzling beauty of Radha, patiently waiting for Krishna, near the glimmering water, seen through the trees!
Aware of Krishna’s godly qualities Radha has the pooja thali, the platter of flowers and sweetmeats near her, the ritual of worship and adulation to be completed for her beloved Krishna.

"The Milkmaid"

Backstory:
It's rumored that Raja Ravi Varma drew this painting depicting one of his loves - Sugandha bhai. The main challenge of this photo was trying to capture the expression, of the eyes, which is supposed to depict love, courage, innocence and a hint of ferociousness.
