Corona humor has been lifting up our spirits online for the past few months. But that doesn’t mean that all quarantine-related jokes are equally fun and harmless. From what we’ve seen in recent examples, cracking corona jokes live can backfire big time.
And Ellen DeGeneres knows this first-hand. The 62-year-old comedian, who hosted her show from home like many others, upset many fans by comparing her quarantine time to being in jail.
During her opening monologue, the star joked: “This is like being in jail is what it is.” She continued: “Mostly because I’ve been wearing the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay!” She soon received a lot of critique.
Another corona humor faux pas came from the K-pop star Kim Jaejoong, who announced on his Instagram account that he was in hospital after contracting COVID-19. He soon admitted it was an April Fool’s joke gone wrong and apologized. The BBC reports that Kim has a long history of pranking fans. He previously pretended to faint during a concert and announced a false marriage as part of his April Fool’s jokes.
