Practicing Self-Care In The Coming Year

Now that the holiday revelry is over, it’s the perfect time of year to think about resolutions for a better you. One of the most common resolutions at the turn of the year is to focus on your health. From buying up new gym memberships to taking up healthier eating, the new year is the perfect time to really stop and assess your health.
This year, try thinking less about specific health goals and more about adopting positive long-term habits that are all about practicing good self-care. Good self-care focuses on meeting the holistic needs of your mind, body, and spirit so you can have better control over every aspect of your life. Whether you’re trying to adopt new habits or just want to take better care of yourself, we’ve put together this great guide for practicing self-care in the coming new year.
1.Take Up a Hobby.
If you don’t currently have a hobby, now’s the perfect time to start. Having a great hobby gives you a way to blow off steam and get your mind off of your work. For some people, a satisfying hobby means really pouring themselves into a sport or learning something new like knitting or culinary arts. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated or challenging, though. Simply joining an online book club and listening to audiobooks can be a terrific way to relax.
2.Spend Some Time in the Outdoors.
Getting outdoors is good for your mind, body, and spirit. It helps your vision to be out in the sun and can be the best way to get much-needed Vitamin D. But being outdoors is also incredibly relaxing and enjoyable. You don’t have to be a big camper or hiker to enjoy the outdoors. Simply take a lawn chair outside and sit in the sun for a little while or go for leisurely strolls around your neighborhood while listening to your favorite music. You’d be surprised at how great it can make you feel.
3.Don’t Be Afraid to Let Loose.
We spend way too much time in our lives feeling obligated to be on our best behavior. Whether you’re putting effort into your image at work or keeping up appearances around the in-laws, performing at your top level can take its toll on your mental health if you don’t get a break every now and then. Give yourself a chance to really cut loose every now and then, whether that means going to a rock concert or taking a night out on the town with your friends over beer and good food. Taking the time out to party every now and then can be good for the soul. Remember, you deserve to have some fun.
4.Prioritize Relaxation.
Giving yourself a chance to relax is one of the most important things you can do. For some folks, this means saving up for a big vacation. For others, this can be as simple as scheduling a spa treatment or taking a relaxing bubble bath with wine. Make sure to prioritize relaxation just as you would schedule anything else important in your life. Taking time out to relax can also help you have better clarity and focus when you go back to work, giving you great productivity your boss will love.
5.Get Plenty of Rest.
A cornerstone of self-care is getting plenty of sleep. This year, make it your mission to get the eight hours or recommended sleep every night. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try an herbal therapy like valerian root or relax with a drop of CBD oil in your tea. If you still have trouble getting to sleep, try using a sleep mask or blackout curtains and be sure to stay on the same sleep schedule each night.
The most important thing to remember about self-care is that it’s a unique experience from one person to the next. Whether your self-care means sunbathing, watching Real Housewives, or drinking martinis with friends, learn what works best for you and make feeling great a priority in the coming year.
