"New Fear Unlocked": Pilot’s Cockpit Video Shocks Millions As Viewers Discover The Reality Of Nighttime Flying

What the pilot sees from the cockpit differs starkly from what passengers see through their windows, often enjoying the twinkling city lights below.

One European pilot, Mattias, recently offered a sneak peek of the flight deck view at night, leaving his one million followers stunned.

The clip has since garnered 17 million views, over two million likes, and thousands of comments from shocked netizens, and even drew an opinion from an aviation expert.

“Me trusting the pilot, and the pilot trusting God,” one viewer joked.

On October 27, 2026, Mattias, an Airbus A320 pilot based in Vienna who shares cockpit point-of-view videos, instrument approaches, and flight journeys, shared a short clip while piloting an airplane.

At the beginning of the video, he is seen in a light blue uniform shirt, a dark blue tie, a lanyard around his neck, and with his headset on.

Then the camera turns, and it's pitch black outside the cockpit window, with only the flight controls lit up in front of him.

“Yes, it really is THAT dark outside. We can barely see a thing,” Mattias wrote in the caption. “But here’s the plot twist: We don’t need to.”

“On clear nights, especially with a full moon, we can actually see quite a lot. But even when it’s pitch black outside, flying is just as safe. We fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), even in broad daylight.”

“Instead of relying on what we see outside, we use our instruments to navigate and know exactly where we’re going,’ he continued.

“So whether it’s 2 PM or 2 AM, for most of the flight, it makes pretty much no difference to us. The view is optional. The instruments aren’t.”

Flabbergasted netizens quickly flooded the comment section, with most saying they assumed planes had front lights.

“Why did I think planes had headlights like cars?” one user said. Another wrote, “Some things are meant to be kept in the pilot group chat.”

A third said, “I definitely thought planes had headlights. But now I’m never flying at night again.” A fourth took a jab: “Just running on faith and gasoline.”

A fifth person commented, “I didn't need to see this. As someone who prefers flying at night because I can't see the ground, I didn't realize you can't see it either.”

“What if you hit another plane?” one joked. Another played along, “They say sorry and continue on their way.”

“Respect. Coming from someone who doesn't even go to the bathroom in the dark,” one person said with reverence.

One more echoed, “Honestly, how does this not scare you? I would be absolutely terrified.”

Michael Porch, senior manager of flying operations at Australian low-cost airline Jetstar Airways, explained why pilots can safely navigate a flight even when it's dark outside at night.

“If there’s no moon or if there are clouds above you, you’re not going to see a lot. It’s not like driving where you’ll see street lamps and signs on the road that might illuminate,” Porch told news.com.au.

“You could be at any altitude, but if you’re up towards 40,000 feet and there are no clouds, you might get a beautiful evening flight. You can see satellites, you can see stars, you can see the moon. It just feels like it’s a whole lot closer than when you’re on the ground, of course,” he went on.

“So, there are some really spectacular nights to go flying, and then there are the nights where there’s not a whole lot to see.”

However, the window does come into use during landing, Porch said, especially if there is cloud or heavy rain at lower levels: “It is conceivable that the next thing that you see is the runway lights ahead of you as you’re coming back into land,” Porch said.

He also explained that all pilots receive simulator training, where they practice flying in various conditions: day, night, sunrise, dusk, clouds, rain, thunderstorms, fog, and low visibility.

As for netizens’ curiosity about the headlights, Porch explained that the Airbus A320 has landing lights on the front of the wings and taxi lights on the nose wheel, which are used on the runway.
