Mirages can make the landscape look as though it belongs in a fantasy film. Under certain atmospheric conditions, light bends as it passes through layers of air at different temperatures. This can make distant objects appear higher than they really are, distorted, or even seemingly suspended above the horizon.
This phenomenon, known as a Fata Morgana mirage, can produce particularly dramatic views of ships or coastlines that appear to float in the sky. These sights may look impossible and otherworldly in a photograph.
