Passengers who sold their homes to live aboard a cruise ship were given less than seven hours to pack up and leave after its operator abruptly suspended operations.
The Villa Vie Odyssey was supposed to be their home as they traveled the world.
But on the morning of Monday, October 26, hundreds of residents aboard the ship, which was docked in Cambodia, were left facing an uncertain future.
Highlights
- More than 200 residents were reportedly given less than seven hours to pack up and leave the ship in Cambodia.
- One resident sold her home and put everything into storage to embrace life at sea, only to face an uncertain future.
- Another passenger said there had been “a cascade of problems piling up on one another” before the sudden suspension.
“Moral of the story: Read the fine print before signing anything and no such thing as permanent cruise,” one person reacted online.
Villa Vie Odyssey reportedly gave its over 200 residents less than seven hours to pack up and disembark
The Villa Vie Odyssey was marketed as more than a conventional cruise.
Instead of booking a cabin for a holiday, residents could buy one and make the ship their home as it traveled the world.
Cabin prices reportedly ranged from $119,999 to $439,999, with additional monthly fees covering living expenses and onboard services.
The itinerary was designed to span 425 ports in 147 countries over three and a half years, letting residents explore the world without repeatedly packing up and moving between hotels.
For some, that meant making major decisions about their lives on land.
Retirees and other residents sold properties, placed their possessions in storage, or gave up their previous living arrangements to embrace the residential cruise lifestyle.
Randy Cassingham, the author of Residential Cruising, a blog dedicated to the lifestyle, wrote in one of his blog posts, “It of course didn’t come from out of the blue.”
The company abruptly suspended its “endless” world cruise due to soaring fuel costs
He added, “We’ve been well aware of problems… it was a cascade of problems piling up on one another, from the business model to mistakes by management to the mentioned crisis in fuel cost and availability, and more.”
The sudden order affected 203 passengers and 156 crew members in Cambodia.
While the company said it is working with residents to coordinate departures and identify temporary living arrangements, the announcement left people facing an unexpected disruption thousands of miles from home.
In a public statement, a spokesperson explained that monthly fuel expenses, calculated on an equivalent per-cabin basis, had historically averaged approximately $1,800.
In parts of Asia, that figure had recently reached an estimated $6,000 to $8,000.
“The company cannot simply pass increases of that scale on to residents, and the resulting shortfall has placed its current operating model under unsustainable financial pressure,” the release states.
“Since the conflict began in late February, we have taken significant steps to reduce fuel consumption, including slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port,” the spokesperson added.
“Those measures have not been enough to offset the extraordinary increase in fuel costs, and we have been unable to continue carrying the resulting operating losses. Our focus now is on supporting residents, crew, and employees while we work toward restructuring and recapitalization over the next 60 days.”
One cruise resident revealed she had sold her home and put everything into storage to embrace life at sea
The spokesperson concluded, saying, “That work is ongoing, and no outcome is assured.”
Villa Vie Residences has also acknowledged that it has not finalized any financing or transaction.
The sudden suspension has brought attention to the sacrifices some passengers made to join the residential cruise.
In comments reported by the Daily Express, one resident said she gave up much of her life on land to pursue the experience.
She previously said, “I did sell my house. I put everything in storage and moved out of my apartment. I was about to sell my car. But I am not a 'woe is me' person.”
The passenger added, “There is a song over here, ‘dust yourself off and try again.’ That is what I've done. I had a 12-hour pity party, then said, ‘okay, you're free. Do something.’ No encumbrances at all.”
Her comments offer a glimpse into the mindset of people who saw the ship as an opportunity to start over.
However, for people who had already sold their homes or given up their previous accommodation, the abrupt suspension has created a very different challenge.
They now have to consider where to stay, how to manage their belongings, and what to do while the company attempts to find a way forward.
A passenger said there had been “a cascade of problems piling up on one another” before the sudden suspension
Villa Vie Residences has acknowledged that the suspension has made things difficult for passengers, crew members, and employees.
“The company is working with residents to coordinate disembarkation and identify temporary living arrangements,” the spokesperson said.
Reportedly, essential crew members will remain aboard the vessel during its temporary layup to maintain its systems.
The suspension also follows an earlier setback for the Villa Vie Odyssey.
Before beginning its voyage in October 2024, the ship spent months delayed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, while undergoing repairs and other work.
Its eventual departure marked the start of the long-awaited journey, during which it covered over 35,885 nautical miles before operations were abruptly suspended.
Moreover, the company behind the “endless” cruise is already facing an active lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
According to NBC News, a buyer who purchased a cabin for $469,000 accused Villa Vie Residences of fraud, alleging that its executives misrepresented the company's financial stability and operated an inherently “precarious” business model.
The company has denied the allegations.
“Permanently living on a cruise ship seems like the stuff of nightmares. Glad it ended,” one netizen wrote
